2018/19 Idrissa Gueye

Gueye was probably more “gettable” for PSG than Doucoure. For starters, the fee bandied about for Gueye was around half what Watford touted four Doucoure.

Gueye, if he does sign for PSG, won’t be going straight in their starting line up. He’s being signed as relatively low-cost cover for the likes of Verratti, Herrera, Draxler and Paredes.

30m seems a tad expensive for low cost cover don't you agree Kieran?

I'm not really arsed if he starts or not but I'm sure they could get Charlie Cheapskate for 5-10m if they are just looking for low cost cover

Does seem inevitable now & can't blame him for wanting to go to PSG.

Replacing him is easy right. Marcel just goes on whoscored, searches for tackles won/interceptions stats from the major leagues & finds the best value. Easy this DoF lark.

He’s not going to be cover for Herrera surely ? I’d have thought it would be the other way round. Herrera been poor for ages whereas Gana has been one of the top players in his position for two or so seasons now.

Again “expensive” is all relative to the buyer isn’t it mate?

PSG have money to burn. £25-£30m in the modern market is the going rate for a fairly run of the mill player.

Special players go for 5x that amount. High potential youngsters go for double that amount. PSG don’t need a special player and they can’t give the assurance of games to a youngster, or justify a big fee for a player who will largely be rotated.

Make no mistake, Gueye is not in that top bracket of DMs, but he is at his peak right now, consistent, fit and reliable. He also, clearly wants to go, to test himself at the highest level. That is all PSG need.

We may have a problem.

Do you think PSG would sell him back?

“Better” is very subjective isn’t it? We’ve all got opinions.

But I’d say with absolute certainty that the fans of the respective clubs wouldn’t swap Gueye for Fernandinho, Fabinho, Ndombele, Torreira, Ndidi, Matic, Doucoure, Neves, possibly even Rice.

I'd go with Fernandinho and Fabinho, absolutely.

Never seen Ndombele. Neves doesn't seem an equivalent but I'm not sure to be honest.

Torreira, Ndidi, Matic, Doucoure and Rice - absolutely not.

As you rightly say though, all opinions.

That Torreira is horrific and Matic is a complete shadow of the player he was, Rice is pyar ladbible.

Yeah, game of opinions. My point is that I don’t think fans of any of those clubs would be particularly satisfied with Gueye as a replacement for any of the aforementioned players. Even fewer so, if offered the swap, would take it.

If we signed any of them and got rid of Gueye, i’d be very pleased.

There is a case to be made that a “destroyer” isn’t a particularly good fit in Silva’s system and is barely utilised in the modern game anymore. It’s perceived in many corners as one dimensional. In that sense, Gueye being used rotationally at PSG, perhaps as a sub to close off games, makes a lot of sense.

More and more, players in that deep lying position are being asked by managers across Europe to contribute more than just tackles, either in a box to box sense (ala Doucoure), a passing / creative sense (ala Neves) or by dropping into a sweeper role alongside the back two, allowing the full backs to push on (ala Fabinho).

Don’t be surprised if the replacement for Gueye isn’t like for like. Silva may see it as an opportune time to create a more dynamic system.

Im looking forward to it myself.

Really struggling with people thinking Doucoure is a defensive midfielder or anything like Gana.

“People” = Me.

He’s not like-for-like because Watford don’t play with a Gueye. And that’s precisely my point. Gueye is a dying breed. Even Kante, who is by far and away the best in that position, was asked to contribute more in an attacking sense by one of the best managers in Europe last season.
