Because he’s a stop gap solution due to the dearth of world class defensive midfielders at the moment. It’s why Barca can’t punt Busquets even though he just walks around now, why Madrid havent upgraded Casemiro, why only now City have been able to replace Fernandinho. PSG have been playing a centreback there because he was at least decent on the ball and positionally better than most. Juve still can’t find a decent one after wasting their cash on Emre Can and Khedira neither of whom they’re happy with.

Gueye was nowhere near top of PSG’s list seeing as they asked for Kante. Gueye is a good player who is available at a decent price in a non CL club and doesn’t mind playing in a rubbish league. That’s all there is to it. I doubt anyone in the PSG boardroom was like ‘lads you won’t believe it, one of the top defensive midfielders in Europe is available, no other European teams are interested, he’ll rank alongside Mbappe Neymar and Verrati as a linchpin of our team for years to come’

It was prob more like ‘who will accept a lower wage, is available, has actually played holding mid before, won’t break the bank, can speak French, won’t block a future star signing in this position after we’ve sold Neymar, and isn’t already playing CL football, oh hello...’

Or they haven't had an effective defensive mid that can win a duel since Matiudi. It's a massive issue with their team.

But he's not a water carrier. Not by definition. He doesn't sit back and pick off passes. He's not even all that discplined as a defensive mid. That's not who he is or even how he plays.

I do think Fellaini should have been kept in DM position and become a proper destroyer in there. If he had a couple yards more pace he would have been phenomenal.

Gueye is fantastic and is gonna be hard to replace for sure, his passing range wasn't great though as you mentioned. Short passing was his game. Only last season he started stepping forward a bit more with the ball which was nice to see. And maybe he is peaking late on his career into a more complete player.

But unfortunately we do still have to sell before players lose their sell on value and it suits all parties to sell now and get some funds in to rebuild with.

Which is why we replaced him with a defensive mid in Gbamin. But it'll be a downgrade at least at first. No question.

The point being made is that when you reject a bid you dont go back a year later and accept the same or a slightly better offer. It looks pathetically weak.

We have sold neither yet and none of us know the actual figures so stop wetting the bed. You're getting wound up by twitter rumours like the other bed wetters here.

Every player is only worth what somebody is willing to pay.

I agree its lower than I thought, we could have held out for more and not given ourselves enough time to replace him I suppose or we could have kept hold of an unhappy player who is 30 in a few weeks.

Or we take the money and buy a better player.

Im sure we will miss his boss tackles, cos everybody knows, tackles win games.
