His passing stats suggest he's nowhere near that bad, I believe them above a horde of angry villa fans who will have fumed at every little mistake every player made and forgotten all the good stuff anyone did. Not that I blame them, it was a horror show, but they're bound to have a negative bias after the season they had.

Still assuming we'll get Carvalho, so this guy in worst case scenario would be because we're selling McCarthy and perhaps another of Cleverley/Barry. We'll have far too many CM's otherwise.

I wouldn't say it's bias, they watched him week in week out so know what he's good and bad at. Stats can distort anything, I'm sure I saw a stat saying Sakho had the best pass completion rate of any centre back at one point last season. If you went purely off stats you'd think he was Beckenbauer-esque ball playing defender

Remember when we picked up the manager and 4 players from relegated Wigan and most people were made up with it. Nothing's changed though hey.

Like £49m for Sterling. I'll give you Delph for £8m however.

lol Nah they have done it a fair few times, 8m on a backup keeper, signing Rodwell and Sinclair a few years ago etc

All jokes aside, perfectly happy to see us sign this lad - especially so if it doesn't effect any other business we are planning and is just a 'bonus' or someone regarded as replacing a current squad player like Cleverley/Gibson etc role int he team

put this lad in the same catagory as Ziyech from Twente (who i hope we get), in that as a squad player they are perfectly worth the relatively low cost punt, and if they don't work out then not much of a loss, but 'hope' to have a more proven quality player brought in ahreead of them.

Then again with both those - if we are itnerested it will be down to Walsh - so isn't that the point of getting him in the club to trust his judgement?

Besic has far more ability than a water carrier. Barry is seemingly bit-part now. McCarthy might go.

This guy played more passes (forwards and in total) than Kante and with a higher completion % but none of their fans moaned about his distribution.

Ok haven't seen the forward passes stat, but overall Kante had a 93 % pass completion compared to Gueyes 85 %. Not that 85 % is bad. I wasn't critiquing the player, just saying we gave a lot of defensive midfielders already at the club.

From what I've seen of Besic his offensive contribution is limited. I know he has a nice dragback and cool tats but dictating play from a deep position I'll believe it when I see it.

Gueye is half-decent but he genuinely is no improvement on our current midfielders.

I'd rather just keep McCarthy.

Heres the thing mate.

Certain players may not be very happy getting bumped down to being squad players or lesser, and if we do bring in Witsel and Carvalho then McCarthy is then 3rd/4th on the depth chart at best.

This guy may be willing to sign for us knowing that, can sell McCarthy for double what we will pay this bloke, and maybe Walsh is judging him on more than a season at a imploded Villa side - when 'statistically' he put up great numbers - for what stats are worth anyway

Yeh that's certainly another way to look at it.

For what it's worth, whenever I saw Gueye last term he looked the best of a bad bunch - and he looked decent for Lille when we played them as well.

His stats are good but also must come with the caveat that he was in a side that had to do a hell of a lot more defending and urgo it makes sense that his tackle count would be higher than a player in a side that mostly had possession.

Kante's was 82%. We do have a lot but I think some will go.

thing i'm thinking is, throw Kante into that Villa side and how would he have looked?

about stats, Leicester played a very defensive game without the ball for a large part of last year mate, so similarly Kantes numbers will be scewed as well compared to say a Arsenal midfielder
