Who is to say he wouldnt have performed better than kante in that leicester side. An may be walsh wanted him last season and lost out to villa and then signed kante as he plan b.

If we had signed the dutch lad from the barcodes instead of the red [Poor language removed] im sure most would have been happy yet he didnt save the codes.

thing i'm thinking is, throw Kante into that Villa side and how would he have looked?

about stats, Leicester played a very defensive game without the ball for a large part of last year mate, so similarly Kantes numbers will be scewed as well compared to say a Arsenal midfielder

Dead certain he would have looked their best player by a mile.

I actually find it quite amusing how people have recent been lauding the prospect of our summer splurge and now they're criticising action.

This lad might not be a Witsel, Mata or Carvalho, and yes I have my concerns over his ability as well - especially after comments from Villa fans.

But really we don't know what Koeman's intentions are: is he a sign that our key captures are not occurring? Is he a development player?

Or is he a replacement for the likes of McCarthy and in essence will be a squad player? I don't know, and to be fair neither does anyone else here.

At least, let's see if he actually signs first before we start hurriedly putting the boot in on him.

I only recall watching Gueye a couple of times last year and he looked alright, but didn't set the world alight. Let's face it though it would have took a pretty special player to stand out for Villa last season though.

Cana's stats suggest he is one of the best in the league at breaking up play and winning the ball back (Although he would have had as many chances to win the ball back as any player as Villa got battered last season)...

A criticism has been his passing and technical ability, however, he had an overall pass completion of 85% in the premier league last season, which is pretty high considering Iniesta and Xavi got around 92% in there prime for Barca and Villa weren't renowned for keeping the ball last year.

For 7.1 mil I think it is well worth taking a chance on him and trusting the instinct of Walsh and Koeman, I think it's pretty clear he is not being signed as a key player or marquee signing, more like a squad player someone who would be utilised in certain games, like how Mourinho used to use Mikel.

The lack of consistency on this forum is alarming:

Most people don't want this guy because he plays for a relegated team, isn't Carvalho. £7m.

Most people wanted Wijnaldum from relegated side because he scored a few goals. £25m.

I am baffled by the logic.

If he's a replacement for McCarthy then surely that puts him in the team every week.

Na I didn't want wijnaldum for the reason alone he didn't look that good

This strikes me very much as Steve Walsh really wanting this kid. Wasn't he originally his first choice over Kante whilst at Leicester?
I don't know where this stuff comes from, as far as I'm aware that was never the case . I think perhaps mixing up us bidding on Vertout, before he went to Villa. Kante's stats were the best in Europe when we went for him. That said, I'm sure he would have been scouted by us. We're heavy into analytics / stats, so who his stats would have stood out.

We tended to buy people who were specialists in their areas, but who perhaps didn't have the all round game some others might have. Kante was the tackler, Albrighton was signed purely on the back of his crossing stats and work rate, Vardy pace and work rate. If you look round the team, each player has flaws in their game... but most of them excel at a certain aspect.

Think for me is that he would be a squad player but one that serves a particular role. Someone who can get a tackle in and cover a lot of ground. I couldn't see him first team regulary but in the grand scheme of things, we get a knock to witsel and carvalhio is suspended, we have a stoke or west brom game ahead, what better replacement to have to throw in but a lad who can at least cover the space for a lot of the game and try and break the play up. For his price then he would be worth it for that role.

Compared to say Moyes playing defenders in that role, or Martinez playing Cleverley?
