If Martinez went.....

We played the best, and by consequence most effective football, of his reign in the first season.
We played very well at times in that first season. But the assuredness in attack wasn't there like it is now.

Perhaps we can say that the defence was played miles better then and the attack plays miles better now.

I leave it open to question what constitutes progress. For me. I like to see all out attacking football, so whilst I cringe at what goes on at the back at the moment, I swoon over the forward play.

Yeah pulis does a good job of keeping a team up but like you i wouldn't want him here.

I do think he has it in him to do better than to keep a "team up" though, given the resources. He's just cornered himself a niche market in keeping crap teams afloat, which has been a good earner for him no doubt, but I feel the need to defend him from his detractors lately who seem to view him as football's answer to Attilla the Hun.

I'm not being confrontational here Groucho, but for me (and I think I echo the thoughts of many other Evertonians) Roberto is already our 'saviour'. The football we played the last couple of decades has been borderline shameful to me. I'd never feel ashamed of Everton, but the football was an embarrassment most of the time. We'd been consigned to the 'long ball' club category and forgotten about...and to be quite honest, I wouldn't have blamed neutrals switching off their tvs by the millions if we'd have been a live game on the telly. But now we play in our own traditions again. We're back with a bang as one of the best (probably the best) football teams in this league. He's done that far more quickly than I ever anticipated.

My first posts concerning RM when he arrived were that he'd face his biggest fight not on the pitch but off it. I knew that the culture had to be changed and that it'd be a mammoth battle given the direct approach that previous managers, especially Moyes, had adopted and which many of our support had been weaned upon. Sadly, that was bang on the money. He's struggled to win the PR war in the media where Moyes' old mates have had it in for him since the day he arrived and he's had to face down the element of our support who seem to think launching the ball quickly from the back is the right (Everton) way of doing things.

So whatever he does and whatever happens from this point on, at the very least Martinez has dragged this club back to its own traditions and struggled to change the culture of the club.

This has to be a wind up. Comedy gold.

Not exactly true that though, is it? Moyes teams gave the impression of having one of the best in the PL but they were nowhere near the best defence in the league...in fact, if you look at Moyes' last four campaigns here his team barely bears comparison with Roberto's defensive record:

Moyes last four seasons goals conceded: 40, 40, 45, 49
Martinez two full seasons goals conceded: 39, 50.

That averages out at 43.5 goals conceded per season under Moyes versus 44.5 goals conceded under Martinez.

Do we need to sort the defence out? Yes. Are you exaggerating the type of solid defence Martinez took and 'ruined'? Yes.

The old implementation of statistics to suit ones agenda trick haha! after this season we could say that we've conceded more goals in the last two than any of those shown under moyes tenure etc etc. The only relevant data as far am im concerned is that of this years; and we are woeful defensively

This Watford manager has had a great first 5 months . But would anyone seriously take him based on that ?

See aidy boothroyd, Owen coyle , Phil brown etc .

I'm not saying he will be anything like those jokers but he is an unknown quantity over here

I love the way the term "the Watford manager" has entered the GOT lexicon :)

And no.....I wouldn't want him, based on that.

Last seasons defensive record under Moyes versus the only two seasons defensive stats we have under Martinez...hardly a major doctoring of data is it?

In reality: Moyes did NOT hand over a cast iron defence to Martinez, and Martinez has NOT been too far away from Moyes' later defensive record. By the way, Moyes shipped a whopping 57 goals in one season...something Roberto needs to sort out this defence for in order to avoid that ignominy.
