If Martinez went.....

Not exactly true that though, is it? Moyes teams gave the impression of having one of the best in the PL but they were nowhere near the best defence in the league...in fact, if you look at Moyes' last four campaigns here his team barely bears comparison with Roberto's defensive record:

Moyes last four seasons goals conceded: 40, 40, 45, 49
Martinez two full seasons goals conceded: 39, 50.

That averages out at 43.5 goals conceded per season under Moyes versus 44.5 goals conceded under Martinez.

Do we need to sort the defence out? Yes. Are you exaggerating the type of solid defence Martinez took and 'ruined'? Yes.

I can answer those questions Dave, you don't need to do it for me.

In Moyes last season, we had the fourth best defence in the league. The actual Premier League Winners Man Utd conceded more goals than us. In his penultimate year we had the third best defence in the league. In 2010/11 we had the 7th best, not great but not too shabby.

Our Defence is now the 15th best in the league. So I think I make a fair point really.

You can make statistics say anything you want. But I don't need statistics, I have eyes.

It's very poor at the moment, no debate. But the wider point is that people run away with the notion of a Moyes fortress at the back and it's nowhere bear the truth of the matter. It was over the course of his time here pretty much just north of bang average.

Different managers suit different clubs and the degree to which can vary massively. Unless you're taking one of the elite and backing him with an unlimited budget there is no risk free appointment.

That is why it's an easy game just to shout down any name suggested because most managers have a dodgy period at certain clubs where it just didn't work out. Even the likes of Cappelo is at the same time a genius and an utter clown.

Even a manager like Ancelloti has largely been used to just shepherding top players that a football director has given him around and keeping them happy. How would he do on a negative net spend with sole control over all club matters and lesser players? (Probably quite well because he seems a smart guy but even he who looks like a certainty for success could end up having a rough time).

All this being said it is not an excuse to stick long term with underperforming managers.

I also think when the time comes to pick a manager we should be far more ambitious than last time. Watching Southampton take Pochettino then Koeman, Swansea looking at Bielsa, West Ham taking Bilic, Watford Flores, Leicester Ranieri tells me that we could attract almost any name in Europe below the very top circle. This is a far better approach than 'who is cheap and available in the NW of England'

On that note what has he done apart from take us backwards, how can any supporter be happy with that

*sticks hand up in the air*

I have never looked forward to matchdays as much since Gary Lineker was scoring for fun.

Upper Bullens STH, 1970s Street Ender.........credentials, impeccable.

No to the Watford man who won a Europa league with Atletico Madrid.

Yes to the Wigan man who's side entertained the country and won a cup but unfortunately got RELEGATED.

Makes sense I suppose.

Viva the entertainers

Verbal....I think the question posed by the poster was would we want him based on what he had done at Watford this past five months.

And no is still my answer to that.

I'm just sayin' is all :)

Last seasons defensive record under Moyes versus the only two seasons defensive stats we have under Martinez...hardly a major doctoring of data is it?

The only relevant statistics are that of this years though, not the last two just because they are completed
