Illegal Approach

I'm not siding with anyone, I'm looking at it objectively. When has a manager ever done anything remotely like sign a new contract in the knowledge that he was leaving, in the past? Do you think Martinez would have done that for Wigan had he been out of contract?

For Moyes to have signed a new contract in order to leave us with a fee would have required him to deceive his future employers (not to mention, us) and burn a multi-million pound hole in their pockets, just for his former employers. That is an utterly ridiculous scenario that doesn't happen. Anywhere.

It's not poaching, it's perfectly normal and happens all the time ffs. When you say "the richest club in the world" what you're saying, which is completely ludicrous, is that United should take pity on us and pay us when they have zero obligation to. What would United fans have thought if the first thing their new manager did was demand that they pay Everton millions for absolutely no reason? What would you have said if Martinez had done that to us?

The damage was done before the approach: a manager or player going into their last year of contract without signing for another period is telling their own club they're looking to get out (and other clubs that they'll cost them nothing). Moyes knew that. He took enough time tying players down to contract extensions and appealing to their loyalty if they got anywhere near that last 12 months. What's sauce for the goose... In other words, he took the decision knowing the likelihood of an approach from other clubs that Everton would not receive a red cent for him in terms of compo. His decision. You mention Martinez, but he was on a rolling contract which allowed for some compensation for Wigan at least.

We got Martinez's staff in for nothing according to someone close to the ins and outs of Wigan, so we can't really complain when Round and co leave for nothing can we?

Who can prove they had substantial time left on their contracts anyway? Round joined in 2008, if he signed a 5 year contract, it'd be up this summer... can anyone prove otherwise?

Regarding the 'tapping up'... you'd have to be daft or naive to think the United job just happened to become available as Ferguson's 'chosen man' happened to be whittling down his contract. Things like that just don't happen to a multi-million pound business. Did he know years in advance? Unlikely. Did he know several months before the season end? You bet.

They would have approached Everton anyway and paid the necessary compensation if he still had a year left, he was always their number one target.

Only in football would someone who has worked out their contract be held up as unethical and a Judas! If only he had the unswerving loyalty of Martinez - leaving his team after a relegation whilst still under contract. But hey, he got them a bit of compo eh.

Different world mate, seeing out your contract in football is for one persons benefit and that's the individual. Unfortunately it's been that way since Bosman took fifa to court.

Next in line would have been Round, because at that time there was no indication that he was going as well. We didn't know who else was going until after the season ended.

I'm sure Moyes would have told Round he was coming with him. So by your logic Round coulsn't have done it either. So who would you have had then?

There will have been compo for the backroom staff - assuming their contracts weren't also, magically, about to expire. But that wouldn't be newsworthy.

Moyes knew he'd get the call - just a case of when. There is a scintilla of insincerity about the "called to Ferguson's house" story. How often do managers invite (summon) other managers to their house to discuss a transfer (or anything else for that matter)? Moyes has glossed over the truth - he clearly knew what was (likely to be) coming - just the detail that might have been shaky - for example maybe it might have occured to him it would be at the end of next season.

IMO still smells but we need to move on and put this to bed. WE now have a new manager so lets concentrate on him and what he could possibly achieve, and signings.

Yep, we needed a change anyway, even if we had Moyes for another 6 years, would we have won anything? Martinez had won a F.A cup and is 10 years younger then Moyes. We could have a gem on our hands.

Yes a gem. It's almost as if Kenwright has not just selected the cheap easy option, who will work in a small budget without complaining.

Behave Martinez is a young manager with huge potential, he was the best choice, nothing to do with the cheap easy option. The cheap easy option could have been the likes of Hughes and O'Neil, Weir.

There's about 300 quotes of him saying that he had yet to make a decision because he was considering his options. He was leaving us under no illusions. It's clear that if an offer like United came in, he wanted to go. That is absolutely fair enough. If he had signed a new contract, the chance of such an offer would have been nil.

I'd like to move on with less of the needless bitterness, because he actually handled leaving very well and it's just tiring hearing people going on about how he's stabbed us in the back when he clearly hasn't.

The last thing I will say on Moyes for a long time is he wasn't an Evertonian like us. He worked like he was, but he wasn't and I'm glad he didn't try and pretend to be. We should all accept that for what it means and jib analysing everything he does and trying to be offended. When the season starts, we should get right behind RM and co and make Goodison evil for Moyes' return.

Rubbish wind up.

Your hero's gone. We feel your hurt, but accept it and move on.

Who's we? I assume you don't mean the people making the thread after thread of anti Moyes posts, seemingly incapable of accepting things and moving on?

My favourite bit of the interview was when he talked about Rooney having a chink in his eye

Love you long time wayne.
