Is Messi the greatest player ever?

Who's arsed if he hasn't done it at a World Cup? He's got at least 2 more and the Champions' League is of the same if not better standard anyway.

We're too scared to bestow greatness upon those still playing but we shouldn't be.

Is he quicker and trickier than Maradona? Yes.

Does he play at a better standard than Pele? Yes,

Is he quicker, more skillful and more prolific than Zidane? Yes.

Is he the best of all time? Yes.

But could he do it on a wet, windy night against Stoke?

Yes, yes he could. Even when they tried to kick him they wouldn't get near him.

Zidane wasn't a goalscorer in the same sense though, really. That's not a fair comparison.

Also James Vaughan's quicker than Zidane ever was.

Basically I don't think you can attempt to quantify the difference between the greats through check lists or numbers. I think you just have to go by what you've seen; their vision, their style, their aura, how much the opposition fears them, their sweet buns.

Messi is the best I've seen like but Zidane man. Dem buns.

Is the above 100% factual and correct? Yes. Messi is the greatest ever.

Still, Ronaldinho in his heyday is my fave.

Zidane, Henry, Bergkamp, Cronaldo, Ronaldo, Xavi, Messi, Figo and maybe Ronaldihno (for that period anyway) would be the ones in my lifetime which deserve recognition as true greats.

I've got to say Messi is the top dog out of them, although Zissou is my favourite. Judge Messi when his career's over I think; right now it's very speculative.

Cronaldo sounds ace. He should change his name to that.

The thing that decides it for me that none of these players have come anywhere near 50+ goals for 3 seasons running bar Pele in the 50s and 60s. Regardless of even his playing style, which is something in itself, that's an unbelievable achievement.

No, a midfielder like Roy Keane would have shut him down within 10 minutes. There is good, there is hard, and there is that small bracket that are both - Keane, Vieira, Carsley...

Pointless discussion.

Old people will say "NO! Pele is!"

Middle aged people will say "NO! Maradona is! Or maybe that Beckybowers!"

Young people will say "Yes! Of course he is! Don't you know football only began in 2003?"

They're all wrong though. The real answer is Zidane.

Dad is 48, he's not melodramatic to say the least, and he says the best player he's seen in his lifetime is Lionel Messi.

Indeed, but he's no George Best though.......

Don't remember watching Best. Only video footage. He was also without any doubt one of the best ever swordsmen to smash a foof. Some of the finest foof available was destroyed. Bravo.

This.

His stats are... bonkers. For the modern era it won't be beaten.

Talking of all time greats, on stats alone Ferenc Puskas has to be up there.
