Is this the season when Shane Duffy breaks through?

Shane is in talks with Everton for a new contract and believe me it's up to him to take it. Some people on here do my head in. At the end of the day shane is in England to play football and that's what he will do if it everton great if he thinks he will get more game time else were so be it. But I really hope not.
Nice to see hes in talks, i personally would love to see him make it with us, IMO hes come on leaps and bounds since his loan spell at yeovil, seems to read the game better and has improved his passing so much

No. Not good enough for a side aiming for the Champions League.

EDIT: Shane will go on to have a good career, possibly at the likes of Sunderland or West Brom, but he won't break through at Everton, IMO, certainly not this season. (Apologies to Brian for my initial, terse judgement. I just replied to the OP, without browsing through the thread.)

How did he enjoy his time at yeovil? I guess not only the football side but also the location will have been a learning curve for him...

Is he earmarked for a squad place this season or another loan? I csnt understand why he isnt at least 4th choice ahead of alcaraz.

Brian, Check my previous post record on your lad if you want to see my consistent opinion on him.

I think he has looked good in preseason. I got the Ireland vs Costa Rica world cup warm up stream and I saw straight away that he has come on in leaps and bounds due to the loan and regular playing time at Yeovil. His distribution especially looked as if it has moved up multiple notches.

He reminds me a lot of Richard Dunne. He will be a fine premier league centre half.

IMO if the offer from Everton is good and he gets the chance to go on loan to a top championship side (like Forest / Derby) or a lower half premier league side, tell him to start practicing his signature.

I think both Distin and Alcaraz are maybe two and one years respectively from the end of the road at Goodison. There is light at the end of the tunnel for Shane here but he may have to be patient for one more year to get the type of regular playing time at Goodison that his career needs.

Brian ,I do hope he takes up the new contract.

I think he has done himself no harm at all this preseason..I have been much more impressed with him than last season.
I think expect too much too soon.Shane is still a very young and experienced player with really only one season of proper football behind him.
I would like to see him loaned out till Christmas to one of the better championship teams or maybe one of the lesser premiership teams.
I think that would help complete his apprenticeship.
How good were Jagielka, Distin etc at 23 years old ? Shane is so big physically that it will probably take longer for him to develop the skill side of his game.
But, if you look at Jagielka he is first and foremost a defender and Shane Duffy will always be the same.
I think another season of playing first team football every Saturday could see him ready to replace Distin in 2015/2016.

The fact that a new contract is being negotiated must mean that RM wants him to stay at our club.

I've never understood people saying Duffy won't make it. It's been based on nothing and he can easily be a player for us - if he can step up and make the cut like I think he could (based on the fact he's a pretty solid player), he would be ideal to be a cup/Europe starter for us.

He should be sent to a lower Prem team this season if he can get enough gametime, and he'll improve 10-fold by having a season of Prem football experience.

It seems the general opinion here is his distribution and lack of pace are going to stop him from making it at Everton. But pace and distribution can both be improved upon dramatically. I cant post links now because im on my phone but a quick google search would show you multiple ways to improve and with the help of all the staff at Goodison im sure he could improve. His passing has already improved recently and he could improve it even further if he puts in enough effort and training. Im not saying hes gonna be a speed demon or xavi but he can bring up his passing and pace to premier league levels.

Pace can be improved upon? Don't think so

Either way, hope he makes it and would rather give him a game than Alcaraz

I never understand people saying he will. Which is based on him being our youngster and a run of 3 good games. (Which evidently get better each time the story is told lol)

You'd think clubs (top clubs) would be beating down our door to get him, given his struggles getting near our first team.

He struggled at times last year at Yeovil!

I just feel its gonna be a major struggle for him here. Should go and learn the game elsewhere IMO, then come back and stick 2 fingers up at all us non-believers!!

Don't think Shane would be short of offers from a number of EPL clubs.

Perhaps Martinez hasn't put him out there to be sold hence no offers. I'm far more likely to trust his judgement of a player than yours!

His passing has definately got better

And people seem to forget that Duffy is there to be Stones enforcer. Stones plays the good footy while Shane acts as his bodyguard, takes care of corners in defence and maybe get a goal or two from attacking corners

He'll be excellent in that role
