Everton was going to be the team of the seventies said Brian Clough on a particular radio show. We never were after Ball left and worst of all we cocked up getting Cloughy as our manager as he would have rivalled Shankly and co for repartee. And if my memory serves me well that's what most toffees wanted at the time. Of course Mr Clough went onto win a couple of European cups with Forest. A double wammy for us . Could'nt write the script.
I will always regard Cloughie up there with Busby.. Shanks.. Stein.. Paisley and Ferguson as the greatest ever.. but do think certain managers only fit with certain Clubs.. Cloughie at Leeds on paper was a good fit but we know what happend there.. he went to unfashionable Forest and the rest there was history.. I don’t know if he would of suited Everton tho.. Cloughie liked to go against the grain and rip up the rule book.. Everton at the time was not broken.. was still regarded as the millionaire Club and was League Champions not long earlier.. they didn’t need revolution more so evolution at the time..

I would have preferred Bobby Robson .......Look what Clough did at Leeds - useless without his partner .....

I think we could have had, Bobby Robson as manager twice in the 70's and 90's. Bobby was an absolute gentleman, and he was without doubt, the greatest manager we never had.

The whole thing regarding the Clough to Leeds at the time was wrong. You're right Clough and Taylor without each other didn't work but I think Clough would have come to us under different circumstances than he went to Leeds and Taylor would have come with him. We were on the wane at the time from what we once were and Cloughie would have put us back up there IMO.

With Taylor maybe.....Bobby Robson imo would have been ideal ....

Clough would have never lasted with our board ....... Bingham almost & should have won a title ....
That was a defining moment in our history mate we were 6/4 on for the title and blew it.
I was living down south at the time and the southern press hated us often referring to us as the Mersey mean machine . I always thought we should have given Bingham more time after we signed McKenzie and Rioch but I didn't see them every week some home games and all the London games.

He signed a certain Bob Latchford too........ the Catt stayed on too long with bad health - selling Bally was a big blow to our team - he then wasted the funds off the Bally transfer - unforgivable ....

Clough and Taylor would have been great for Everton, for me Robson wasn't in the same league but would have suited the hierarchy at the more as he wasn't as devicive.
Bobby Robson was a fantastic manager who proved himself abroad too.. I would put him in the bracket just below the greats of the game and probably alongside the likes of Don Revie..
It’s amazing when you look back at the managerial household names... all proper footballing men of the game.. big Malcolm Allison at City.. John Lyall at West Ham..Ron Saunders at Villa.. Keith Burkenshsw.. Jim Smith..Oxford and ofcorse big Ron from the Swan at West Brom.. notice there are no longer proper characters of the game anymore just robots who tow the line..

Even the players have no character.. players seemed to be divided into groups.. the boozers.. George Best.. Greavsie and Bobby Moore.. the womanisers like George Best and Frank Worthington and finally the gamblers like Stan Bowles at Q.P.R. and Mick Channon at Southampton.. if I was to buy a book to read I know which type I would buy and it wouldn’t be a Alan Shearer or Michael Owen book which would highlight how good training was and what he had for tea..

I appreciate some of the older blues stating he didn’t teach the same levels of performance at Arsenal and the other clubs. Yes he played in arguably one of the greatest club midfields ever. But also I think the move had a detrimental effect on ball himself. It’s common knowledge he adored playing for the club and its fans and just maybe some of the drive and determination he was famous for went out of his game, as his heart wasn’t in it.

So basically your saying he wasn’t a good professional as they should play there optimum each time they pull on a shirt of whoever... he always played quite well for the National side too from what I have read...
