The sad thing about Gordon was that when he was trying to force himself into the team under Benitez and Lampard he was displaying exactly what he is now for Newcastle, workrate, pressing, running behind continuously, getting into dangerous positions. He played a huge role in keeping us up.
Then Lampard’s second season started and despite the club building their attack around an academy player who hadn’t even been a first team player just a season earlier, he suddenly took on this demeanour of being a big deal. The work rate just decreased and he stopped doing all the good things he’d done previously when trying to prove his worth. By the end no one was even that bothered when we sold him because he wasn’t really affecting matches much anyway.
It would have been great if Dyche could have got hold of him because I think he would have cut a lot of that nonsense out and given Gordon the platform to really play his best football, but given the financial situation we’re in it’s likely that it always was going to end with Gordon being sold.
Tbh after selling Rooney none of the young players leaving hurts me that much anymore anyway. It would have been nice to have seen a team with Stones Barkley Davies Calvert Lewin Gordon down the spine having success but they each had their reasons for exiting the club (aside from DCL yet of course)
