Presumably they activated that clause as they felt there was profit to be had.

If we bought a CM with legs we could move McNeil back to 10 and have Ndiaye and Philogene either side. Can’t play McNeil at 10 though in front of Gueye and Mangala as there’s no pace to get the ball back.

Funnily enough, when he made his first appearances under Emery in the pre-season of 23-24, he played as a right wing back and really looked the part (albeit in pre-season friendlies, but they were against Premier league teams). All of a sudden, he's off to Hull, but when we brought him back a lot of Villa fans thought it might be in a hybrid right sided role rather than out and out winger but thats proved not to be the case. As PeterW confirms, I've never seen him play on the left for Villa so presume he'd play down the right for you.
With regard to why Villa want rid, I don't think they're desperate to sell, but with the (hopefully) impending signing of Malen from Dortmund, thats another body in front of him in the pecking order and the kid just wants to play - Emery has mentioned a number of times that he believes in him, but equally he never stands in the way of anyones development ( as he didn't with Iroegbunam).
The reported fee in Brum is £14-15m - no other players involved, not sure if you guys have heard differently?
