2024/25 Jake O'Brien

We haven't seen much of Jake but bloody hell if he can't get into either the crap Everton or even worse Ireland teams there's not much down for the lad.
Let's hope it was a really low downpayment and the rest based on unrealistic add-ons. Said it at the time that it was a mindblowingly stupid and unnecessary transfer, and it looks more and more bonkers by the week. Utterly ridiculous, but no fault at all on Jake obviously. Let's just ignore the fact we have no full backs capable of putting a cross into the box and no decent strikers - we'll get a fourth choice centre half in for our entire transfer budget instead.

It must have been on the back of worries about branthwaite going on strike or forcing a move.
But let’s wait out, he is a young player so hopefully he comes through and we complain that he should have been playing all along.

That's one of the things, people (here Evertonians) find it hard to change their minds. Sometimes (not just in football but in life) you just have to have the guts to throw up your hands and say "got that wrong". Young is what we could get, afford, was willing to come, etc. Of course, we'd like Roberto Carlos or the like, even Cole or Baines... but Young has done well IMO.
Have you seen Roberto Carlos lately - carrying a few pounds.

Young has done well recently - so a bit of recentency bias but you are right that's all we can afford.

We laugh at about the 3 incidents against forest last yr but that could have got nasty!!

Serious questions need asking about this signing, namely:
  • Who identified O'Brien as a potential signing?
  • Was John Textor involved in the transfer and what was the real fee and terms of the deal?
  • What was his intended role in the squad?
  • Who signed off on the transfer?
  • Was he signed knowing that no further funds would be available for additional transfers?
  • Has he been injured or underperforming in training, hence why he gets 0 minutes in a struggling team?
  • Was he signed a year in advance as the successor of Branthwaite?
It strikes me that Everton needed numbers, felt like Branthwaite would end up going and Textor, in the middle of a takeover attempt, allowed Everton to get him for a massively deflated fee with future add-ons that are probably hard to attain. I would imagine Dyche had little input and say in the transfer, and doesn't rate the player. Dyche also knows he won't be manager when Branthwaite is sold, so doesn't need to bother himself with O'Brien this season.

Prob all valid points. In fairness looked decent in the preseason.

Branthwait was probably looking out the door, and we were expecting a bid at the last minute. This was to mitigate that

I seem to remember Forest and Palace wanting him as well.

The lad has obviously got something there just is isn't a chance he's getting in the team before you know who's favourites.

I think you'll see him in the team next season with a changing of the guard.

Till then everyone needs to take it easy on him,am sure he's as frustrated as anyone the fact he's completed wasted a season moving here.

Two other teams with Textor connections.

I think he's probably a decent player who's got plenty of time to come good. My guess is we signed him because of a dodgy deal with Textor and he's actually not quite at the level we're looking for just yet. He's basically had a decent half a season in Lyon after being let go by Palace for a pittance and he's not fully broken into the Ireland side yet. Similar to Patterson I think it's an occam's razor situation, the logical conclusion is probably that he just isn't that good at the moment.

He was brought in to replace Godfrey (and Holgate I guess). All clubs need 4 CBs they can call upon and he is for now 4th choice. Tarkowski never getting injured will obviously limit his chances too.

When you`re a club not playing in Europe and getting knocked out of the cups early, I think you can take a chance on having 3 senior CBs in your squad, particularly when you have a bigger problem at the other end of the pitch trying to get goals. The biggest thing that annoys folks is that when we have so little cash to spend, we go and spend it on a CB to replace a CB who was n`t getting much of a run in the team.

We don't have any back up youth team CBs ready to step in either though.

We deffo needed a 4th CB, we went for a young one rather than a fill in (probably due to Tarkowski getting older and Branthwaite being a wanted man).

We did buy attacking players too to be fair.

Personally I would have liked us to go for a CB who could fill in at full back (or the other way around) but such is life.

Nooooo. You definitely need 4 CBs. You certainly don’t need to spend 50% of your transfer budget on your 4th choice though. Could have easily picked up a half decent loan/free transfer.
