I see only one position that Patterson might come good in: wide right.

I've said before about his injuries: they are caused by positional naivety. He's stretching this way and that and turning abruptly to get where he needs to be when we get caught with the ball.

RB is not this lad's position.

Never will be.
That's not a bad take in terms of why he gets injured...although I do think his positional sense will get better.

Garner needs to be played centrally, he is the type of player who can easily develop into the beating heart of this team, he has the passing game, the strength and the football brain to develop into a real midfield general. He really would be wasted at right back, he has so much more to offer.
FBs are extremely important in todays game. How would it be a waste to finally settle that position down?

I can pretty much plot our onfield downfall to the time when we lost all semblance of an attacking threat from at least one, usually two, flanks.

Every time we play it is patently obvious that we are screaming out for somebody to take charge in central midfield, put their foot on the ball and have that extra split second to make their move. Garner shows all the signs of being able to become that player and by the way that kind of player is far more difficult to come by than a full back. We have nobody else in the squad capable of becoming our beating heart in the middle of the park, why play him as full back, where he has no experience and will quite possibly be only a slight upgrade on Patterson?

The difficulty with players as capable as Garner is that coaches play them in several positions and deprive them of the chance to develop properly in their true position. Garner is a very promising central mid, why on earth play him at full back? Our lack of creativity is more from our lack of quality in central midfield than anything else.

I totally agree with this. Garner is the only player we have who has the composure we desperately need in midfield. I hope he has an injury free season, and becomes a regular for us in a central position. He can play other positions, but this is his best one, and we badly need him there imo.

Same was said about a certain, young Seamus.

You only have to see the difference Robertson and Alexander Arnold made to the rs. They elevated a decent team with a boss front line into a title winning side.

The real benefit he gives you at right back is comfort on the ball, something even Seamus doesn't really give you.

There was a point at the end of the first 21s game where Garner, Gibbs White and Smith Rowe linked up on the edge of the opposition box and it was excellent. The defenders didn't stand a chance.

I seem to remember Gareth Barry played left back as a youngster too. Garner might not end up as a right back in the long term but if it gets him in the team now, it can be a positive step in his career.

That Garner wont assume a F?T role at RB?

No, I dont know that. Neither do you.

But the signs are there that he can do that role and he's willing to do it.
No manager worth his salt would seek to convert a talented midfielder into a full back. The influence and importance from midfield is greater than it is from full back and far harder to source in the transfer market.
