2024/25 James Garner

….from what I’ve seen, I can’t envisage how Patterson gets a place in the team given his poor defending and lack of attacking quality. Playing Dixon as well as Patterson is admitting Patterson isn’t good enough and needs support. It’s a complete waste of a position.
I think Pattersons attacking ability is underrated, his defensive qualities needs to improve as does Dixon’s but they could help each other out and learn together, Dixon’s speed is a definite asset and his long throw ins, they would be a huge improvement as Everton concede possession on a good % of theirs, any improvement in the full back positions will be very welcome even though Young has played very well on both sides recently.

Been disappointed with Patterson attacking game here mate, i saw it far more at Rangers, he definitely has it in him.

…I read somebody posting Young has more assists this season than Patterson in his Everton career. I think his attacking prowess is a bit of a myth, I can remember a terrific cross for Danjuma to score and one for Dobbin in an U21 game at Southport.

He’s got a decent stride on him but hasn’t shown the prowess he had in Scotland. Maybe it’s the quality of opposition or maybe he just hasn’t applied himself at Everton.

The standard in Scotland is very low. You take a big chance on taking a player from there that stands out in that league. We took Patterson from Rangers thinking he was the finished article as he was playing first team for them and a full international, but he hasn`t showed that sort of ability since he arrived here. But then again The RS have Robertson who was brought down by Hull and had a few years there to settle into the game down here before getting his more to them as a player at ease with the game in England and stepped up a level when he made that move. I think the progression from Dundee to Hull to RS allowed Robertson to step up each move where Patterson moving to us may have been a sidestep at best.

…I remember Robertson struggling and getting dropped at Hull, he gave away daft penalties in consecutive matches so he struggled for a time there.

Is anyone else getting a whiff of “This is Spinal Tap” drummer vibes from anyone playing RB for us these days?! I rate Garner, but not at RB. Needs must I guess but just want to see him forming partnerships with the MF players he belongs with. Get well soon James!

"And Patto put in a cross and then just spontaneously combusted, right in front of the Park End Da's and kids in the Family Enclosure. It took us ages to get over Youngys gardening accident, so this one is really gonna hurt".

Yes we all see things differently, I’ve seen him drive forward with the ball into the penalty area and I’m willing him to have a shot on the goal but he’s put the ball across with no- one anticipating the cross, he’s never had a decent run in the team with injuries putting him out of action, basically I think he has the potential to become a regular member of the first team and I haven’t given up on him.

He must then have knuckled down and when he got back in the team his performances must have improved greatly. Is it that Patterson lost his place, was dropped and just gave up trying, or did we give up on him after we dropped him? Its a shame that in a position we have a number of players that can play RB that we can`t have one of them look like they nail down that spot in the team.
When I`ve seen Garner playing RB he looked OK, but don`t think it`s his best place.

We’ve had to reduce squad quality/size to cope with being financially crippled by the arbitrary FFP rules.
We don’t have the quality on the bench not to have to play players as soon as they as able.
We are barely hanging in in the league as it is.
The squad size is basically the same this season as last season though but ya the full back problem has made it a rush bringing players into those positions asap. It's concerning how many injuries the club took into the season and how many there has been in only the first 2 months compared to a relatively good campaign on the injury front last year.

I think the club signed him more so for potential to take over from Coleman after a couple of seasons rather than being the finished article as he hadn't made many appearances for rangers only getting his chance when Tavernier got suspended then regaining his place. It was a gamble as you say the league up there is a low quality. Injuries then have hampered and chance of progress.

They both have 2 assists in roughly the same games/time played for us, it takes 2 clicks to check this info.

We don't do attacking down the wings or overlaps - the only chance for a full back to get an assist is like Young's "ASSIST" to McNeil the other game or by a cross from deep, where DCL is fighting with 2-3 defenders all game and has to head it down to someone else. We also will never do any of this attacking full back nonsense with Dyche, as hard as it is for you to believe for some reason, and he looked better going forward when we had Lampard as we actually utilised full backs.

Anyway, all stats point to you being wrong but you keep ignoring the figures you don't like as you've got a gut feeling his defending/attacking/shoe size isn't up to match the team and he's 'not applying himself'

Garner is not and will never be a full back and we're wasting him as a full back. Hilariously and coincidentally all of you who hate Patterson ignored the fact Garner was walked past for most of the 1st half, and they focused going through him as it was easier. He recovered to an extent in the 2nd half but the 1st half was a liability at best and we're lucky Newcastle had a nightmare in front of goal.

…ha, ha what an odd expression to suggest i (and others) ‘hate’ Patterson. I was delighted when he signed but I watch him and he’s been very disappointing. It’s a football forum so I express that judgement. I’d actually be genuinely delighted if he’s the answer to our RB problems, no agenda here just opinion.
