James McCarthy

I actually think, as mental as it sounds, I wouldn't swap McCarthy for Kroos.

Ozil has been by far a better player than Kroos and hasn't done much in the Premier League this season. I actually think, despite a £40m vs £13m(?) price tag, McCarthy has been better.

People would be quick to write McCarthy off when mentioned next to players like Kroos, but when you think about it McCarthy might well be just as good. Of course Kroos is silkier, but he doesn't close down, tackle, burst forward or put the effort in anywhere near as much as McCarthy does in training.

Not that any of this matters like, but yeah. Football isn't all about foreigners with fancy hair cuts and tight fitting shirts who wear socks above their knees.

@Walken ???

James grewed on me during the season. Level headed and hard working, he became a fan favourite. If he starts to get some goals he will be one of the best players in the last 30 years wearing a blue shirt. Another potential captain. Cheers!

I am pretty sure that in 20-30 years time, he will be seen and remembered as one of the finest Everton players we have had.

If he sticks around that is.

Boss interview with Graeme Jones:

“He has been like that since I met him at 15. I’m not kidding you – anybody who knows him knows he is so consistent as a human being. He loves his football.

“When you go to a football club as a management team there’s always one player who always gets identified with that management team. We had it at Wigan initially with Jordi Gomez and then here with James McCarthy.

“The pressure is on that player more than any other signing because they have come from your former club. He’s had to get through those hurdles first and then he has gone from strength to strength after that.

“So it’s not been easy for James. Out of all the signings, he’s had the most difficult challenge and he has come through that no problem.”

“If you check his [McCarthy’s] record, he is closing in on 300 games already and he is only 23 years old. This is not a guy who at 23 is not experienced. Physically and technically he always had that ability.

“We took him to Wigan with us and the manager has to take a huge pat on the back for the tactical aspect that he has given James. Every other area he had but I think the gaffer, being a former midfield player, has taken James to another level.

“I haven’t got a Facebook or Twitter account but I received a copy of the tweet the other day that said two thirds of the world is covered by water and the other third is covered by James McCarthy. I didn’t think it was a bad comment!”

My contract negotiations with McCarthy would go like this:

I'd pass him a contract with all the relevant signatures on and everything filled in, apart from his signature and his wages. I'd let him fill both those in himself, no questions asked.

good, longish interview with Jamesey.

McCarthy says one of his personal objectives for the season is “to add a few more goals to my game” which is not surprising given that Everton fans had to wait for the last match of the campaign to see him score.

And, as for his objectives for Everton, McCarthy is looking very high. “We are no different from any other club. Our main aim is to get into the Champions League. We want to improve on last season and push on even further. Everyone’s dream is to win the Premier League, isn’t it? Liverpool nearly did that. They did not get there in the end. So you never know. Obviously, we will bring in players and we won’t get carried away. It’s a longer season but we will give it our best shot.”
