The board backed Roberto if you look at his signings and also backed our EX to quite a degree in his dealings, so have to say I disagree with your statement. Prior to that it was all under Johnstone and he allowed Smith to make a number of big signings.

'Berto should grab him by his horrid ginger barnet and drag him to the quotes wall on our Finch Farm stairs and hold him his head in place to read "The only way after leaving this club is down" quote. 'Berto proceeds to give him a backhand, McCarthy falls to the floor stunned, then Barkley and his thug mates come out with some old fashioned English cricket bats and break his legs before making a guard of honour for the approaching Besic wearing a suit, he rips off his jacket to reveal a "Besic, 16" shirt and takes a gun out of his pocket. "Are you going to kill me?" asks a tearful McCarthy, pathetically. With a laugh "We will see what happens" replies Mo.

whatever. Journo's spinning one line in an interview. Doesn't mean anything. Hasn't he just signed a new contract anyway?

Its not a myth its a fact for gods sake! This will be the only year i can remember where someone hasnt been sold in order for us to sign anyone.

But that's not what you said.

Mean in terms of net spend mate. Selling our star player every season in order to buy 3 or 4 is hardly what id class as backing the manager tbh.

We have not sold our "star player every season".

Only twice this century has our "star player" been sold.....Rooney and Arteta.

They were the best player in the team when they were sold.

The only three other examples in support of a flawed argument you could possibly come up with are Lescott, Rodwell and Fellani.

Subsequent events have shown we would have been mad to turn down the silly money we were offered for them.....and on all three occasions the money raised was used to make our team better.

Fellani himself was brought in when Lescott left....along with Disdin.

Mirallas was signed after Rodwell went.

And by Jove we got a better deal than United when Fellani went there for silly dough and James MacCarthy was bought for half the money.

None of those three players were our "star player" when they were sold.

Going back a bit further Alan Ball and Duncan Ferguson were sold when they were our best player at the time they were sold against their wishes.

I suppose we could add Lineker to that list....he left to play European football.

So in my days going to Everton there have been five players IMO who were our "star player" when they were sold.

Ball, Lineker, Ferguson, Rooney and Arteta.

There may be others (Barmby perhaps...or Speed?) but one thing is for sure.

It is just a myth that we sell our "star player" every season.

Could be Roberto is quite happy to let him go for a ridiculously high fee in order to finance some other signing(s).
Hence the signing of Besic as a ready made replacement.
