We need to extend McCarthy's contract asap to end all speculation about his future. I agree that he's probably our most important midfielder at the moment and he deserves to be paid like it.

I'd say Besic has a more expansive game that we are yet to see from james, something he should look to improve, plus I feel fully confident mccarthy will cover the full backs in our system, so might be a more risk free move to play besic furthest forward, if we are to play all three

Out of them all I think Besic is more suited to the number 10, even Gibson would be a better option than McCarthy at 10.

I felt like McCarthy wasn't fully fit Saturday and that hurt us. But.... he is most important midfield player. I think Besic should come in for Barry when he needs a rest or picks up a yellow.

Definitely Besic as a 10 over McCarthy. He seems more creative than James and judging by a couple of the goals he's scored he has a much better shot than him too.

I've only seen Besic play in our friendlies and the world cup but think he mainly played as a Cb or RB for his previous club so might be a bit too much to ask him move up to an unfamiliar role whilst he is trying to adapt to a new country/league.

Gibson is one of our best passers and moving him up the field may help reduce contact injuries although doesn't seem to have helped Ross avoid them.

Overall, if Barkley is only out for 2 months as currently predicted, we probably have enough cover in Naismith/Osman/Pienaar/Mirallas for the role.

Besic, Gibson, McCarthy or Barry would never be a CAM.

They all play well because of how they play deeply. Don't misconstrue being a good technical player as a cm, to be an opening to play further forward.

It doesn't work like that, and it 99.9% won't work. And i can bet my house on it not working with any of our cm's.

It's about a lot more than the technical aspect, it's about positional sense, about knowing that area of the pitch etc, and most players just don't adapt to that.

Baines couldn't play LM for that exact reason. Oviedo struggled at LM/RM for that reason too. Coleman went badly stale at RM because of it also.
