James McCarthy

It's something Gibson has to his game. We should be wanting our centre backs to be scoring more goals too.

....ideally they all chip in with a few. Our team model has Barry and McCarthy sitting deep, Barkley being key in linking that area with top third of the pitch. It takes a lot of effort for McCarthy in particular to also join in with forwards but I think it's something he's certainly looking to do (See Osman's goal v Lille). It just underlines the shifts Coleman and Baines put in.

There have been situations in the past few games where McCarthy has had a shooting opportunity around the edge of the box but passed it. Gibson on the other hand is much more likely to take a shot on. I do think McCarthy will add a few more goals to his game.

Martinez said when he arrived that he could develop into a 10 goal per season player.

It's hard to see that at the moment.
There's evidence of him driving into the area like against Swansea but he errs on the side of caution I think because Barry's pace is likely to be exposed and we would have both fullbacks stuck halfway up the pitch. Gibson isn't quite as slow so maybe we will see more of it?

He has those driving forward runs in his locker - he saw the opening against Sunderland in the second half last week and carried the ball 30 odd yards into their area. I think he's just very slightly conservative in his play, determined not to make a mistake that creates a vulnerable situation. That's not a bad thing, and as he grows futher into his role we'll see more expression from him, I'm sure.

The most exciting thing about James is he has every component of a top central midfielder: physically he's fast and strong; mentally he shows good anticipation and terrific effort (the goal clearance on Sunday was heroic); and technically he can pass, has good feet and comfort on the ball, and is capable (see Hull last year) of getting in the box and scoring. He might not be showing the latter all that much, but I honstly can't think of the last midfielder we had who possessed all those qualities.

He is the nearest I've seen to Howie Kendall on a football pitch in a blue shirt. Reads the game brilliantly as well, like Howie who was the Catts 'brains' on the pitch. Martinez uses him deep when needed and then gets him to push on when we need more in attack. Sunday was a perfect example of how he is used in games.

Not my best work but will that suffice?
