Err, no but, watching highlights and teams on tv is totally different to watching live games (i.e. in the ground) were you can see whether a players fits into the system or not

Call me old fashioned but I don't judge players on whether they fit into a system, I judge them on if they're any ****ing good or not.

I didn't say I knew him inside out. I'm making the point that he's hardly been invisible to any football fan who follows the Premier League has he? I've certainly seen enough to "justify a proper opinion on him", let's put it that way.

I have an opinion on Chris Brunt, James McClean and hundreds of other footballers too. If you don't watch football and take an interest in other players other than those who wear the blue of Everton, that's your business, but you shouldn't be writing off legit opinions on a player on this forum based on your own limited knowledge of football.

My actual view is he's a decent, 6/10, consistent player for what it's worth.

Hahahaha brilliant.

So because I say, lets wait until we see him in the blue and how he fits into RM's system before making a judgement on him, makes me have limited knowledge?? hahahahahaha

No, it's not. You can gain as much from watching a game on Sky as you can from watching in person. The only difference is the viewing medium.

For example, did I have to be at the Ireland game to legitimately form the conclusion that McCarthy had a quiet, if not outright poor game? Of course not.

No, I assumed that you didn't watch Football First or games of football beyond Everton based on your comment. If I'm wrong about that, fair enough, but that's all I meant by limited.

Really???

Thats interesting.

Lee Carsley; awful under Walter Smith, not the best footballer.

Under Moyes, deployed as an anchor man, told to break play up and keep it simple. Turns into one of the main men in our squad and is missed when injured.

Example of how a player fits into a system rather then basing him on his technical ability

Carsley was Carsley for his entire career the fact that Walter didn't use him in the most appropriate manner doesn't change what he was & what type of player you'd watch on a Saturday afternoon

Totally disagree; you gain more from a live game than TV. You get to see how players react off the ball as he camera tends to follow the ball. Seeing a midfielder track a run, or see danger and immediately get over there is little details which make a good player great and is not picked up on the TV

For example, did I have to be at the Ireland game to legitimately form the conclusion that McCarthy had a quiet, if not outright poor game? Of course not.

And thats fair enough; but people saying they're worried about us spunking £13m on him is totally wrong.

No, i do watch sky/MOTD and try and travel to a few European games a year; i just know not to judge a player after watching football first

Totally wrong; Carsley at Derby was the Carsley we seen under Moyes. Then he went to Blackburn and moved to a more central midfield role and was totally over run; the same happened under Smith. Moyes played Carlsey to his strengths and that fitted into the 4-5-1 system.

Do you really think Tim Cahill would have been as effective in a 4-4-2 as a central midfielder; or did the fact that he played behind the striker and in front of the midfield make him a more dangerous threat for us.

Often wondered why managers and scouts bother to travel miles and miles to watch a player, may as well just wait for him to come on the t v , yes a real puzzle that.

All opinion of a lad who hasn't kicked a ball yet for us. 13m may prove cheap, we may have blown a fair bit of money. What he does for us is what counts. Everyone can have an opinion on how he was last night but its how he works for us and Martinez that's pertinent.

Get a thesaurus for your birthday did you lad?

McCarthy had a quiet game against Sweden - but he is still a youngster -
and one pays a premium for a Brittish player in the PL because the good ones are so few and far between these days -
look at him as a long term investment - if he pulls it off at Everton it will turn into a great investment

I just pictured a fella sat in a pub in full Liverpool Strip when I read that comment.

We all have opinions on many many players who don't play for Everton. However, I also think it's fair to say that you get a much clearer and more accurate opinion of a player when he plays for your team and you watch him regularly.

I watched bits and pieces of Steven Naismith for Rangers prior to us signing him and when he signed for us, I actually thought we were getting a good player..

I also watched bits and pieces of Darron Gibson at Manchester United, and thought he would add absolutely nothing to us. Fitness issues aside, I totally underrated his abilities as a footballer since I've seen him close up playing for us.

I know I'm not alone there either.

We really do need to just wait and see what McCarthy brings to the table when playing in a royal blue shirt.

In a couple of years, we may look back and think we were done by Wigan and wasted a big chunk of money on him, or we may look back and think we got an absolute bargain.

Yes we can all gauge a rough opinion on what we think it will be, but none of us can be confident in that opinion at this early stage.
