James McCarthy

I agree, but Felli was at a much more advanced level when he came in IMO, as in he was able to dominate games on occasion (vs. Liverpool in Europe and a burgeoning reputation across the continent as a top talent) and his only issue was consistency which came with games at a high level. He already had the tools in his locker.

My problem with McCarthy is that, to me, he doesn't look to have the tools in the locker to make the step up to becoming an integral part of our side. I don't think of McCarthy as a physical presence in midfield, or an excellent distributor of the ball, or even a particularly decent tackler or harrier of the opposition. I see him as 6/10 in pretty much every area with little scope for improvement. In short, I see him as a mid-table Premier League squad player.

I hope he does come good and becomes a dominant force in our midfield, but I can certainly understand why Evertonians are uneasy with him.

This sums it up for me

The beauty of Felli is his versatility, but he is a DM. I've previously posted his 2009/10, 2010/11 stats when he played there and they are world class, best in the league by some way.

How ridiculous that you pick out the 1st Norwich goal. If you watch the goal again you'll notice just how lucky Whitaker got. He actually tries to pass the ball wide, hits Baines and only for the rebound to go straight back to him. This causes everyone to misjudge the play and it catches out Felli! Total fluke. You can see Baines throw his head back cause its so jammy!

He was only just starting to re familiarise himself with the role and was still nowhere near his best... it was coming. Anyway enough about him, he is gone.

McCarthy is only 22 and will improve. Lets be patience. The one thing we can all agree on is the kid is cultured and has an engine - not a bad combination.

Not just in the first 4 games but also in pre-seaon, apart from lacking a cut edge in front of goal, we transition from defence to attack way too slowly. McCarthy will improve this as he is much quicker on the ball then a Felli, Osman, Gibson, Barry or Heitinga.

Ideally, we bring in a midfielder come Jan with more creativity, as we continue to phase out the old guard.

Agree with this bit wholeheartedly.

Cringing at comparisons to Fellaini. You're deluding yourselves.

There isn't any. Fellaini was on a lot of top European sides radar - we strategically moved for him on deadline day to avoid the inevitable 'gazump'

Desperately hopeful the lad will do the business, and doesn't become Joe Allen MKII

Funny to see your irrational rants against McCarthy. :p

I'm not sure on McCarthy but there was nothing strategic about our move for Fellaini. He's been panic bought on deadline day for an inflated price by Moyes twice now

spot on .. he is and never will be the class of player Fellaini was and is. Recently I googled "top 10 European midfielder players" and Fellaini featured in most, the stat sites also feature him highly. We are all free to think what we like and say what we like about Fellaini, Baines, Everton etc. but I struggle to understand those who vehemently and incessantly dismiss Fellaini as a genuine talent.

He does a bit of everything well: making himself available, passing, intercepting, tackling, nicking a goal on occasion.

Forget Fellaini and forget as best you can the price tag, and if you cant come to the conclusion that you'd want someone of that nature in your team then I really give up. He's also very young and learning all the time in these early years as a pro, so his potential is only to get better, imo. I hope he strikes up a good partnership with whomever gets paired with and that could accelerate things more quickly for him.

Nailed it.

And between this season in United's big games and the World Cup it will be proven time and time again.

Its was proven here the season before last, that why most of us were fuming that Moyes chose to play him behind the striker for most of last season even tho Moyes said he was the best midfielder in the Premiership.

Barcelona track Hamilton's Scottish Premier League star McCarthy
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER
UPDATED: 09:48, 24 November 2008

Barcelona, usually linked with the world's leading players, are monitoring the progress of Hamilton Academical's James McCarthy, according to the teenager's agent.

McCarthy, 18, has been watched by a number of leading Premier League clubs but the midfielder's agent, George Gray, said: 'Barcelona have asked me to keep them informed about James's situation.

'There are a number of English clubs keeping tabs on his progress, too. He has been down to Liverpool but for the moment he is enjoying playing in the Scottish Premier League for Hamilton.

'This is his first year playing against the likes of Celtic and Rangers and his performances have been particularly impressive.'
McCarthy made his full debut for Hamilton against Ayr on Nov 11, 2006; a day before his 16th birthday. He signed a three-year contract last May after Hamilton were promoted.

Though born in Scotland, McCarthy has chosen to play for the Republic of Ireland because of his Irish heritage. He has played for the Under-17's, 18's and 19's and despite overtures from Scotland reaffirmed his desire to represent Ireland.

so whats the problem with McC?

Im happy thats he's here, young, proven, full of potential, fair price. wtf are peeps whining about

I just think some people are utterly paranoid about Wigan, and are paying far too much attention to deluded Kopites attempting to take the proverbial. Some people need to grow a thicker skin and look at things a bit more logically without having preconceived notions.
