James McCarthy

I agree, but Felli was at a much more advanced level when he came in IMO, as in he was able to dominate games on occasion (vs. Liverpool in Europe and a burgeoning reputation across the continent as a top talent) and his only issue was consistency which came with games at a high level. He already had the tools in his locker.

My problem with McCarthy is that, to me, he doesn't look to have the tools in the locker to make the step up to becoming an integral part of our side. I don't think of McCarthy as a physical presence in midfield, or an excellent distributor of the ball, or even a particularly decent tackler or harrier of the opposition. I see him as 6/10 in pretty much every area with little scope for improvement. In short, I see him as a mid-table Premier League squad player.

I hope he does come good and becomes a dominant force in our midfield, but I can certainly understand why Evertonians are uneasy with him.

I can agree with that like. He isn't a particular type of midfielder which does make you think what is qualities are. He isn't a play maker, he isn't a strong physical presence and although he is a ball winning midfielder he's not branded as simply one. Makes you wonder what his job really will be. But my pints mainly revolve around age and that he needs to be given time, as Felli was. Martinez obviously sees something in him and a log of people rate his as a big talent so we will have to see.

The first goal v Norwich away what was Felli role as a defensive midfielder then he was completely static - no the best position for him will be playing upfront behind the striker for UNT Carrick will play the deeper role - he will have competition and get fed up when dropped when ala Rooney is fit!

Wrong answer. Felli is a world class DM / Deep lying play maker on his day. If he can keep up his consistency all the United fans who aren't rating him will be proved wrong. Don't get me wrong, he's a lovely option to have as an improptu second striker should you be chasing a game, but DM is definitely his thing.

Mate, not having a pop so no need to get all defensive. Read the post again.....I'm simply stating that some Blues have written him off before they've seen him in a blue shirt. I didn't notice any posts ripping Seamie a new hole after the Irish sides miserable showing.

Seen this a lot. But it's a lie.

Show me one Evertonian who doesn't want him to be completely boss for us. I bet you can't.

It makes no sense to want an Everton player to fail. I was his biggest critic on here, but he's our player now and gets every inch of my support.

Reckon our best CM partnership for this season at least will be Gibson-Barry. Soz Jim.

I think Barry will be competing with Gibson for the same place to be honest. Barry in front of the back 4, linking in with McCarthy and Barkley in midfield.

But Fellaini only dominated a few games and was still quite raw when we bought him. In hindsight its easy to say he had the tools in his locker. McCarthy has played a lot of games at the level we are at, that Fellaini certainly hadn't, and has been surrounded by worse players and still managed to stand out.
His scope for improvement could be enormous if he is given the chance. We have I think over payed for him. But if its the cost to make the system work and gets us playing the way Martinez wants, then does it matter?

Don't think he means people want him to fail, just reckon he will.

McCarthy will be a key part of our starting XI, even if one of Barry or Gibson are better than him.

Everton don't pay £13m for a player to sit on the bench.

Yes when Felli first came hear he had no fans at all - he used his elbows more than anything else it took him time to adapt to the prem - he became a very imposing attacking midfielder with great ball control from his chest but he did lack pace and was a poor tackler his best position is upfront behind the striker - sorry to see him go but he intended to leave who ever the Manager was as he stated many times he wanted champions league football his house move to Manchester was a big hint - at least he warned us he would be off somewhere unlike DM!!!!!

I implore you to elaborate. I think he has some of the highest tackling success percentages of anyone in Europe. Weird comment.

Yeah I think Barry and Gibson would be a bit static, Gibson was at his best in his first season when he had an athlete like Felli alongside him, McCarthy also has an engine on him so you would think that would suit him or Barry much better. I'd say Felli is a better player than both, but the plus of having more option and Osman not being the only cover might outweigh that in the long run

The beauty of Felli is his versatility, but he is a DM. I've previously posted his 2009/10, 2010/11 stats when he played there and they are world class, best in the league by some way.

How ridiculous that you pick out the 1st Norwich goal. If you watch the goal again you'll notice just how lucky Whitaker got. He actually tries to pass the ball wide, hits Baines and only for the rebound to go straight back to him. This causes everyone to misjudge the play and it catches out Felli! Total fluke. You can see Baines throw his head back cause its so jammy!

He was only just starting to re familiarise himself with the role and was still nowhere near his best... it was coming. Anyway enough about him, he is gone.

McCarthy is only 22 and will improve. Lets be patience. The one thing we can all agree on is the kid is cultured and has an engine - not a bad combination.

Not just in the first 4 games but also in pre-seaon, apart from lacking a cut edge in front of goal, we transition from defence to attack way too slowly. McCarthy will improve this as he is much quicker on the ball then a Felli, Osman, Gibson, Barry or Heitinga.

Ideally, we bring in a midfielder come Jan with more creativity, as we continue to phase out the old guard.
