James McCarthy

Who said I didn't like him?
You seem quite determined to let everyone know you think he is average. People are entitled to feel tentative about our second most expensive signing in history, I get that. I just don't get the need to disprove positive reports of him.
Again, I know whenever we tend to cross paths it seems to be confrontational, but it's just genuine curiosity on this occasion.

Utter pony that

Funny how you and Tubey both reckon my post is utter gash whilst at the same time both avoid the fact although slightly tongue in cheek my post is exactly the type of stuff said by people against the McCarthy signing, wasnt it you who watched the ireland game and then said some **** about 'see nothing in him' the same ireland game where everyone of their players looks gash under trappatoni's horrid system, coleman included?

I'll phrase m post earlier in a way you may understand then

reasons given by the whiners

moyes would never have signed him, moyes was boss in the transfer market, martinez is buying the spine of the **** wigan team
****ing hell why are we buying 4 players off wigan for, they got relegated and are ****, if mccarthy was that good why didnt he keep wigan up like
replacing a WORLD class fellaini that everyone reckons is one of the best in the world in mid and replacing him with the new joe allen
lol hes just the irish joe allen, ofc he has good passing stats hes a crab
last point i made was assuming if you didn't want mccarthy it must be abroad you wanna buy as theirs no domestic midifelder we could attract higher rated than hi

Mate, you need to give him a chance. Don't be like that because we signed him from Wigan.

I don't understand the comparisons with Fellaini, he isn't even half the defensive midfielder Fellaini is, but that isn't the position he will be filling in the team so that fact is a bit irrelevant. It is more than likely he will be replacing Osman in the team. Taking this into account he is definately an improvement on what we already have and is freshening up an ageing part of the midfield.
Is he worth that much money? Probably not, but most managers who make a big step up go back to their old teams for players at over-inflated prices (Rogers for Allen, Moyes for Fellaini) as it helps them speed up the introduction of their philosophy on the team. Part of me thinks that he will become the next Joe Allen when the next summer transfer window comes around and Martinez feels more comfortable looking further afield for players who are technically more proficient at the creative passing game.
All in all I think we will see an improvement in the tempo of our game due to him and barry being more natural passers of the ball which will increase our ability to get the ball in the back of the back of the net.

Ahh another great attempt at wit from you i see, thing is mate as you do these type of posts about 4-5 times a day its kinda boring in a big way, but by all means continue, one day you may say something amusing or worthwhile :)

It just doesn't sit well with me, that's all. It's "kopitey". I've seen "Joe Allen passes like Xavi" and "Jordan Henderson is the next Gerrard" so often that it disturbs me to see Evertonians trying to delude themselves about McCarthy's qualities and try to justify the fee just because he's signed on the dotted line.

If people are honest with themselves, on balance it's more likely we've overpaid for a squad player than it is that we've unearthed a gem who'll develop into something special. That is perhaps what is getting under my skin the most - the feeling that what people are typing here isn't their honest opinion; rather it's the desire to just get behind the lad because he's here. I understand it, but... I'd rather people were just honest about their misgivings (as, indeed, people were in the transfer thread before he actually signed).

The irony is that if you go to the Summer Transfer Window thread you'll see me actually defending the interest in McCarthy (here: http://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/t...transfer-rumourZ-thread?p=2147410#post2147410)

The problem now is that instead of being a squad player bought in for around £6m (which I would have applauded; McCarthy is certainly a good squad option and worth a punt at that price), he's a marque signing for £13m. So instead of being an astute signing to replace Osman, he's now the next big thing in our midfield.

It's not the lads fault he has that price tag, but it is what it is - we're Everton, and £13m is a massive sum of money for us. It's £5-7m out of our January budget. That's a whole Kevin Mirallas to put it in perspective.

I just think it's silly to actually try and justify it and claim it was a good deal, because based on the level he's at now and the ability he has shown, we've overpaid dramatically.

So to sum up in one thought - I can't call it a good signing, and I can't understand those who say it definitely IS a good signing. I'm hoping beyond hope we haven't just signed a very expensive Scot Gemmill.

'Fellaini is the best DM in Europe' - Tubey 2013.
Very kopite!

Good post, even if i disagree with some of it, thing is mate theirs definitely some people (maybe including you in this) who kind of let the overly positive view of some push them the other way almost as if your trying to be their counterweight, and it comes across as all negative when i remember you being relatively pro signing him last month.

I honestly havnt seen too many if any posts here saying weve just signed the next gascoine or george best, the vast majority reckon hes a good player with things he needs to work on to reach the next level, which due to his age he has the time to do

EDIT: well disagree with most of it in fact but at least you put across your view properly rather than one liners ;p

Answer me this then - if we hadn't signed McCarthy, would there have been a load of unchallenged posts from Evertonians saying "we've dodged a bullet there...", "thank God we haven't paid £10m+ for Mr. Average" etc?

Seriously, could you imagine any thread being started which expressed the thought "I'm gutted we missed out on James McCarthy for £13m"?

Perhaps the answers to those two questions will get you to my train of thought on this. I'm neither immediately positive or negative about anything to do with Everton; I look at everything on merit. I don't feel the need to hop onto one side of the fence depending on what anyone else is saying.
