We will play 2 DMs.

We always do. But hopefully Martinez will continue to let one of them go forward a bit as McCarthy started to at the end of last season.

Graham Jones said in an interview not too long ago (cba finding it) that sometimes we've played with too many DMs at home, so I'm hoping that means for home games against teams we should be beating, we'll only be playing with one DM.

That's positive news for sure!

McCarthy shouldn't be used anywhere but defensive mid. If you want to control games and consistently win games against poor opposition then you need midfielders who can manipulate the ball and create chances for the wide players and strikers. In recent times only Pienaar Arteta Osman and Gibson have been able to do this.

Barry McCarthy worked ok in the first season because Martinez had Osman and Pienaar doing the creativity ahead of them. Fine if you want to play that way but as soon as you lose your creative wide men you're screwed (as seen this season).

Besic and Cleverley are the same type of players. They can do a job putting tackles in and retaining the ball but they will not play penetrating passes to set up goal scoring opportunities. How many goals did Barry Besic McCarthy or Barkley get last season? They're not good enough! Gibson and Osman would do a better job as the deep lying two. We used to share goals around the midfield with Arteta Osman and Cahill chipping in with a good number season on season. Now we're an injury to Lukaku and Stones away from a relegation battle. We have a midfield that doesn't score, barely makes an assist, and doesn't protect the defence (based on last season's defensive record), yet people are coming out saying Barry and McCarthy are vital and undroppable. Can someone please tell me what the hell they're doing for us which is so good because u really cannot see it. All this season has proven is our over reliance on two 35 year old playmakers and that Maryinez has no idea how to play without them. It doesn't matter how many blades of grass NcCarthy covers if he's only going to pass it backwards once he gets it.

That's why Martinez has (pretty blatantly) said that he's looking for a player who will play in that position - not just as a 'traditional' No.10

But that depends on the measure you are using - if its goal scoring then Wilshire is the most attack minded, but he is playing in a team with a better calibre of player overall. I remember Roy Keane as an attacking midfeilder who developed in to an excellent box - box midfeilder - i see McCarthy doing the same albeit in reverse. IMO he will be a much better well rounded player then Wilshire.

I think TBF - Mcxcarthy played in the FA Cup final at 21 and bossed Yaya Toure and David Silva - who are better then Xavi and Iniesta IMO.

Ok mate. Better than the Barca midfield circa 2010-11. That was probably the best midfield of all time, Silva and Toure might not even make the best prem midfield of all time.

If ypour talking about Xavi and Iniesta very good players but far from being the best midfield of all time. IMO. Good players in a good team withthe best player of all time. Sorry don't mean to be argumementitive!

DM -- McCarthy / Besic
CM -- Barkley / Cleverley
AM --New player / Osman

Thats how its shaping up with Barry being phased out for Besic and Gibson crocked + Naismith surplus once an attacking midfielder is signed.

Barry/Naismith/Gibson all should be moved on.

Being linked with Spurs for £20m plus Lennon...

Wouldn't take that to be honest. He's got the potential (maybe already is) to be our best player by far. Plus lennon will be available for free in 6 months time.

The source is the mirror. Nothing to see here

The above is true but should read...

DM -- Gibson / Besic
CM -- Barkley / Cleverley / McCarthy
AM -- New player / Osman

Martinez plays with a DM that's comfortable on the ball and can distribute. That's something McCarthy will never be.
It's the 5 players below those two that need to be flexible, depending on who we are playing and where.

He wants options. Who knows, he might occasionally set up with a diamond shaped midfield of 4.

Ledson is being groomed to replace Barry.

Naismith is a good third striker option. He can lead the line or play slightly deeper. He offers something different.
