No one would give us money that matches his importance to our team, or enough money to properly reinvest on several players.

I think that Bešić is very similar player to McCarthy therefor Macca is replaceable from what we already have. And we cant say that about most of the first team players and their positions

For +20m we could buy very quality playmaker/no 10/player we need

I'm a big fan of Besic and think he'll be a very good player but McCarthy is still young but has an abundance of Premier League experience under his belt already. Besic however, has only had one season in the league and will probably still need some time to adapt and develop.

I cant list down potential players for positions and include Gibson. Just seems fruitless. Point taken on McCarthy and Ledson although i think McCarthy will begin deeper to fit in one of the more attacking players at CM.

DM -- Gibson / Besic
CM -- Barkley / Cleverley / McCarthy
AM -- New player / Osman

Martinez plays with a DM that's comfortable on the ball and can distribute. That's something McCarthy will never be.
It's the 5 players below those two that need to be flexible, depending on who we are playing and where.

He wants options. Who knows, he might occasionally set up with a diamond shaped midfield of 4.

Ledson is being groomed to replace Barry.

Naismith is a good third striker option. He can lead the line or play slightly deeper. He offers something different.

God no.

James McCarthy is a wonderful footballer.

Hes not as flashy as say somebody like Besic for example, but hes a key first team player for me, 1 of the first names on my team sheet.

The first name on the team sheet. Most important player on the pitch for us most days in my opinion. Unless we get an astronomical amount of money for him, there is no way we could let him go.

Absolutely. Well almost. He's in that group with Coleman, Baines, Jags, Lukaku, etc, who absolutely start if fit to play.

I for one was a little bit sceptical when we paid £13m for him. But I wouldn't want him to go now. Thinks he's a vital part of our team given Barry's age etc. and of his 'type' of player, he's one of the best in my view. Besic,Gibson, Cleverely and Barry all bring something to the table, but McCarthy is ahead of them all in my opinion. Don't sell!!

That's my worry, I do wonder if they know there's interest and are considering selling him this summer hence no new contract.

I wouldn't be taking 20mill off Spurs tho, I think there's bigger moves out there. He'd walk in to Utd's current midfield and is exactly what they need although I wouldn't sell him at all.

As good as he is, I still think there's loads more to come from him as well.

Wouldn't want him to go but if we got Lennon plus a quality creative player to replace him then I'd get over it. A case of 2steps forwards one step back but we do have too many CM's IMO.
