James McCarthy

McCarthy is the right age, he is a top player with the right attitude. He will be our holding mid-field player when RM puts Barry out to grass. Besic looks the part and I really hope he develops into a great footballer, I love his attitude and the way he plays. I know you can't stand still in football but there is some truth in the old adage "if it is not broke don't fix it". McCarthy is definitely not broken.

I could be embarrassed in a few weeks time if this happens, but I reckon this is just paper speculation. Spurs have become one of the popular clubs in the media and the media want views for their websites and to sell papers.

As far as I know, Martinez is a big admirer of McCarthy. He's managed him twice now and has raved about him since he came. McCarthy hasn't come out publicly and said he wants to leave, and in April he said how happy he was etc. It wouldn't surprise me if we were waiting to give him a high profile type press conference signing a new 4 or 5 year deal at some point in the summer.

None of it makes any sense as to why we are deliberately trying to force him out of the door. £20m for one of the most effective players in the league in that position is not good enough either. £30m plus and we would maybe think about it. With all the TV money, we're in a good financial position as well. And we're looking to improve as a squad and club. Why would we sell one of our most important players to a team that we are trying to finish ahead of next season and did do the season before last. Spurs are a club that we are competing against in the league.

Are there no Lee Carsleys around these days, some one who can play the ball chasing holding MF role and only cost us half a million as a replacement for McCarthy should we wish to cash in on him?

I don't think Besic although I really rate him is ready to be a starter next season plus I wouldn't want to strengthen one of our rivals so I hope we offer McCarthy a new contract which he deserves.

I also don't have any faith we would use the money to strengthen the team since we seem to be broke again even with the extra TV money.

I have no doubt that there are better players than McCarthy available at cheaper prices than what we would sell him for. The fan boys will make out as if that's an absurd suggestion, and yet McCarthy replaced Fellaini as the best CDM in the world at less than half of what we sold Fellaini for, and Besic who is soon to become the best CDM in the world, cost less than half of what McCarthy cost.

Yea but the team wouldn't see the profit so why would we as fans want to take the risk. The club should have plenty of money. It obviously isn't willing to spend it and I don't think we're going to see any evidence of debt reduction or progress on a stadium instead.
