James McCarthy

He had a superb 20 odd minutes. Mirallas up top and James coming on totally gave us the momentum to see that game out. He was busy, he was pushing high, in fact the midfield was in general at the point where we getting ****ted 2ndhalf. Well played James and a great ****ing win end of!

I thought his debut was full of merit. Passing was good and certainly fit into the team easily. You can't judge a player after 20 minutes.

Thought he was decent when he came on.. gave us energy won the ball in a few vital position sometimes and passed it nicely.. not sure why people are slating him?

Tubey stop being a tool lid, he came on played ok, and as importantly the team shifted from one that looked like we were gonna concede soon to one more likely to get the second, all in all good sub, confidence building debut from the lad, which after the horrible week the Irish just had he probably could do with

Hes not worth the £13m price tag. Evidently shown today.

Can he improve...100% but I dont think hes going to become a world beater ala Ross the Boss

Maybe not, but Fellaini wan't worth the £15m plus when we signed him. Look what happened 5 years on. I like McCarthy and fully believe he can grow into a fine Everton player.

To compare him to Ross is unfair, very different players. Ross probably couldnt do what James can do. Maybe they can bounce off each other and be a great midfield partnership hopefully for years to come?

No coincidence they created stuff all after he came on. He was breaking down plenty, and looked very comfortable on the ball. His introduction, combined with Mirallas' move forward, changed the game.

I thought the move to put Mirallas up top and bring McCarthy into midfield helped us get back into the game a bit more. Absolutely brilliant sub by Martinez.

We were getting over-run before he came on, after he came on we were back in the game.

He's a water carrier, but a very good one. His job is to play the way he is facing, retain possession, offer himself to team-mates on the ball and hold his position to shield against opposition attacks.

This job is not as easy as it sounds, it's not about chasing around diving into tackles, it's about concentration.

Take Jack Rodwell, it is almost certain that this is the job Mancini bought him for (at 15m), he should be able to do it in his sleep but he doesn't have the head for it.

When McCarthy has a run in the team people probably will still ask the same questions but when he's out injured or suspended for a couple of games, THEN you will know his value.

In other words, did what a defensive midfielder does.

What I mean is, can you name an instance of specific play where you though "well in McCarthy lad". I lost count of the amount of times I had that thought for Barry and Naismith tonight, for example.

His performance was mediocre/average/whatever, but there were specific instances which concerned me. It didn't make it a bad performance, but it worried me long term. I noticed things that Joe Allen and Jack Rodwell have made a career out of, and that's not a compliment. I'm not saying he's definitely going to be poor long term, I'm just noting the concern.

It took Howard Kendall ten games, Dave Watson a season to find his feet, but there were specific instances in this kids twenty minute cameo that 'concerned you long term'.
You need to dunk your head for a bit I'd say.

Yeah, the lad will be OK. I thought he looked quite comfortable on the ball, he'll fit in nicely.......

^ this for me.

I was pleasantly surprised by his contribution tbh & we looked a better unit in the 20 mins he was on the pitch than in the 25 mins of the 2nd half that preceded his arrival.

Highlighting 1 poor pass (that was actually an attempt to play an incisive through ball) & labelling his performance as 5/10, whilst ignoring the numerous times that Barkley ran down a blind alley, gave the ball away or made a poor decision & labelling him as an 8/10 - smacks of someone with a desperate desire to prove their previous viewpoint on the player (i.e. that he's bang average), as being correct.........

I hold the same viewpoint, but based on that cameo yesterday, he gave me no reason to suggest that I'm right.......

..I liked his mobility. Certainly looks like he can get about the pitch and I'm sure he's the type of player RM likes, confident in his own ability to keep possession for his team.

One of the worst shouts ive ever heard on any forum.

Youve judged a players worth on a 20 odd minute performance.

I dont even need to say what he did or didnt do, if you make statements like that about players after 20 minutes, you wouldnt even understand what i was saying, your clearly an absolute clown.
