James McCarthy

Every player makes mistakes. Difference is, Barkley was commanding for the first hour of the game, drove the ball, won free kicks, instrumental for the goal, a solid 8/10 performance... whereas McCarthy did nothing but do his best Joe Allen impression for 20 minutes.

Don't see the point in praising mediocrity just because they're wearing the Everton shirt. The praise should be earned.

What you could do is give the kid a chance and not expect him to dominate a game that we are already being over run in by a top side when brought on with 20 to go. I take it you wernt at stoke for fellainis debut all them years ago as he stunk the place out. I despair at some of our fans

I was impressed when he came on yesterday. He did the job that was asked of him well and linked up well with Barry. He does what he is good at well, but when he gets a run in the side and hopefully some confidence i'd hope to see him being a bit more of a threat, using his passing ability and vision to add a different dimension to us going forward, instead of simply keeping things ticking over. I've no doubt that by May he will be an almost guaranteed starter. Both Martinez and Trap have said before that the one part of his game he needs to pick up is his ability to take the game to the opposition and really kick-start attacks. I'm confident he'll do this by May.

I think people are very confused as to what type of midfielder he actually is to the type of midfielder they think he should be cos of the fee we payed out for him?!.

He's usually a CM thats a giver and goer who uses the ball well and gets into good pockets of space to recieve the ball and use it intelligently and is a vital cog in a team that is trying to retain possesion of the ball. Yes he can get on the ball and drive on from deep with it as ive seen a number of times when he's played for Wigan, he as even popped up with a goal once or twice, but lets get one thing straight, he's no Makalele, nor is he a Ozil either!.

Dont get me wrong, he can put a foot in and he can pick a pass, but his game is all about finding space and keeping the ball ticking over, being composed and using the ball well. In time he will come good. He's one of those players that does his job really well but very unspectacular but is a big asset to the team.

Tubey is moaning about his passing, his tackling or lack of it, bottling out and things, but the likes of Barkley, Mirallas & Coleman were all like that yesterday, either backing out of 50/50's or just hanging a leg in instead of sliding in to win the ball, and the amount of times Ossie & Barkley missed placed passes yesterday was a joke, yet Tubey makes out Barkley was outstanding yesterday!. Yes, in parts, but he showed his inexperience alot at times yesterday aswell when giving the ball away, keeping hold of it for too long instead of giving a pass.

All i'll say is, we payed £15m for a young Belgium CM 6 years ago and was giving him bucket loads of abuse about him not being good enough etc and he soon changed everyones tune!.

Who would you compare him to ?

Cant believe people are having a go at him, played 2 internationals in a week and come on as a sub against a very dominant Chelsea team. He helped stop Chelsea's momentum with his energy and enthusiasm, giving us fresh legs in midfield.Big well done to Martinez to for changing things the way he did, couldn't have seen Moyes doing that.

In time McCarthy will be at the very hub of our midfield.

At Wigan the manager was used to play him in a certain way because of the lack of options, but McCarthy can be a lot more than the player we saw at Wigan. In time I think he will turn into a box-to-box midfielder driving our team forward.
Similar in style to a young Gerrard or a young Roy Keane.Only time will tell how good he will become but that is the style of player I think we will see in the future.

...we can argue all day if he's worth his transfer fee or not, but only time will tell.

I think people are over stressing the value of the transfer fee, to be fair.

If you look at clubs who are bad in the market (Villa, Newcastle, Sunderland, the rs etc) the problem is they keep having to buy the same player repeatedly. So they spend 6 million on a CM, it doesn't work they buy another one and another one and another one. It's especially bad because they change managers a lot and each new boss gets rids of the lats guy's players. Whereas we have a continuity where we keep players for 5-10 years and only pay the one fee, so we do better for our fiances then we should.

Look at how much money we've spent on the striker position in the last six years vs how much we've spent on goalkeeper (1 player for 3 million), left back (1 player for six million), etc etc. It's expensive to get a position wrong, even if each individual fee isn't that much.

The cost effective way of buying players is to get it right and not have to buy a replacement.

McCarthy is young, he likes our manager and he's proven to be loyal to worse teams. I'm quite happy to pay twice as much for someone who is likely to be here twice as long, that's better than a 5 million buy who will be retired or begging for a move or out of favour within four years.

Who would you compare him to ?

Im not sure i could compare him to any one paticular player tbh?!. But i do like the way he plays, i think he's very neat and tidy in possesion, rarely wastes a ball, keeps things ticking over and moving, but he can put a foot in and muck in and he can get a goal. I think he'll prove his worth in the end!.

No I didn't "judge" him on 20 minutes - I pointed out instances of his play that concerned me. They might not play out, but the concern was there.

It doesn't mean I think he IS a crab because he played one crab pass.

I blame Executioners Bong for bringing this term on deck in relation to McCarthy.
