We should have cloned him.

*cue someone posting a pic of a monkey*

You can see evidence of that in his game though. He was probing forward for the RoI in their last two matches this week, for instance, and he's done this for Wigan (and McAuthur did too, tbf). If it's in his game he can build on it.

You may be expecting the finished product when (despite us paying out huge for him) he's a work in progress but with a lot to offer right now. I dont think this lad's ever going to be a Captain Fantastic figure piling forward and grabbing the game by the scruff - I dont think he has the personality for it for one thing...at least at present.

Another worry for me. I feel he has a touch of the "Rodwells" about him... And that's borne out by four years of Premier League football without pulling up any trees in this league. He's a talented lad who'll get by but perhaps not a forceful character which will result in too many passive performances. Fingers crossed it doesn't...

Your imagine the old 4-4-2, with a number 6 and number 8 in midfield, we dont play that system, we play 4-2-3-1, with 2 wingbacks bombing on, we require our 2 in midfield to play a less expansive role within the team.

I'm not. I'm picturing a staggered central midfield consisting of a holding midfielder (Barry), a central midfielder (McCarthy) and an attacking midfielder (Barkley), combined with two inside forwards (Mirallas & Pienaar), two attacking full backs (Baines & Coleman) and a versatile forward (Lukaku/Jelavic/Kone).

It's 4-2-3-1 but the role McCarthy should have is one where it's a static 4-2-3-1 in defense and a 4-1-3-2 in attack (where the opposite winger tucks in to a centre forward role when we attack down one flank).

Watching the game against Chelsea, Barry moved across to cover for Baines (he was originally a left back of course) and I would imagine that Martinez would look to do the same with McCarthy covering for Coleman.

This would allow the fullbacks to get forward taking out the oppositions full-back whilst having cover in the form of Barry and McCarthy whilst still leaving at least one defensive midfielder in the centre at any time.

The benefit here for us is of course our full-backs doing what they do best (attack) and also expands the width of the pitch in our favour which in turn benefits our forward players such as Barkley, Mirallas and Lukaku who should theoretically gain more support.

I just dont think "we" play like that, I mean I dont recall Osman "pushing on" much yesterday and he would be somebody I called a number 8 all day.

Clearly the fact we were playing Chelsea might be a factor, but still.

I think, 27.5m aside, but 1 of the reasons we "got rid" of Felliani is cos hes not a number 6, hes a box to box, he can play the static number 6 and play it well, but its a waste of a player.

He has to become more Castlemilk less Bearsden.

But Osman was more advanced all game than Gareth Barry by design? That's what I mean by "staggered". The problem with Osman is that he's the invisible man in that role because he can't defend or attack properly. You're right, he's a number 8 trying to play a box to box role and being incredibly bad at it!

I'm not suggesting McCarthy should be on the edge of the opposition box, I'm saying he should be more advanced in attack than Barry is and certainly shouldn't be playing an identical game as a pair of water carriers as that would be insanely negative.

I welcomed McCarthy as a signing because he should be a massive improvement on Osman, but to be that he needs to be playing a much more varied game than a water carrier, as Barry has that role down pat.

That's a fair shout, but a bit deeper than that and less dynamic in possession.

I'm not expecting McCarthy to be a box to box midfielder in the conventional sense, but I expect him to offer something going forward and in possession other than possession recycling.

And that's why I pointed out what worried me about him in that cameo, and I hope I don't see it too often from him. We can't applaud those types of choices IMO, we should be expecting a lot more at Everton.

I cannot believe some of the absolute garbage being written in this thread particularly by "Tubey" !!! McCarthy was on the pitch for 20 minutes, in that 20 minutes I saw not one thing that worried me about him or his future at Everton! As for him not "offering anything going forward" has it not occured to you that he was probably asked to do a particular job for the team in a particular situation, and in my opinion and it would appear many others on here, he did it pretty well!

No doubt you were one of those bleating that Fellaini was a waste of money five years ago when no-one had really heard of him and our ex manager spent £15m on him!

Give the lad a break and a bit of time (i.e 20+ games) before you write him off after 20 minutes of his debut game!

Nope, try again.

Also, the rest of what you wrote was terrible. Way to not read properly lad.

Well, I think Barry will be the more number 8 out of the 2, hes got that little bit more "craft", McCarthy has "possibly" the higher work rate.

Early doors yet, as ive said, I have no viewpoint on the lid, other than I think we overpaid for the role he will play.

Massively doubt that. Barry shouldn't go beyond the half way line. He showed his quality as an anchor for our more adventurous play yesterday.

This is interesting and something I concur with - or, at least, hope for.

This bit:

He runs all day, break up play, very comfortable on the ball and can dribble with it a little bit; he rarely makes a mistake and rarely wastes the ball. He’s got that attacking thrust but also can put a shift in defensively. And this is still a young boy who is continuing to grow physically and mentally in the English Premier League.

THAT'S what I'm looking for. The solid versatility described there, performed at a higher level.
