I think people are over stressing the value of the transfer fee, to be fair.

If you look at clubs who are bad in the market (Villa, Newcastle, Sunderland, the rs etc) the problem is they keep having to buy the same player repeatedly. So they spend 6 million on a CM, it doesn't work they buy another one and another one and another one. It's especially bad because they change managers a lot and each new boss gets rids of the lats guy's players. Whereas we have a continuity where we keep players for 5-10 years and only pay the one fee, so we do better for our fiances then we should.

Look at how much money we've spent on the striker position in the last six years vs how much we've spent on goalkeeper (1 player for 3 million), left back (1 player for six million), etc etc. It's expensive to get a position wrong, even if each individual fee isn't that much.

The cost effective way of buying players is to get it right and not have to buy a replacement.

McCarthy is young, he likes our manager and he's proven to be loyal to worse teams. I'm quite happy to pay twice as much for someone who is likely to be here twice as long, that's better than a 5 million buy who will be retired or begging for a move or out of favour within four years.

...some really, really good stuff in here. Its important for a club like ours to get it right and ensure we get value from players. Generally we are good at doing this and the indication is that it will be the case with this lad as he will certainly fit the managers long-term strategy.

I blame Executioners Bong for bringing this term on deck in relation to McCarthy.

I didn't even know he had, but it's definitely a valid concern for him as he has that type of game. I don't care whether he is a water carrier or not, he has to have a more expansive game than that to play at the level we require.

He doesnt tho.

Martinez system is all about 2 water carriers in the middle of the park who win the ball and give it short, the creating role rests soley on the shoulders of the "number 10" and the 2 wing forwards.

Just to help us, what player are you visualising here that would be a good role model?

Disagree. I think Barry provides that role, the second midfielder needs to be encroaching further forward to supply support behind the number 10 and drifting into pockets of space, especially against weaker opposition where we play further up field.

Otherwise, the opposition would man mark Barkley and let Barry/Gibson/McCarthy knock it about with two yard passes inside their own half and you'll have all of that ultimately pointless possession that we laughed at Joe Allen for.

If we're happy with McCarthy coming in and doing exactly what Allen does and praising him for it, then we're hypocrites - especially when it's been shown at Liverpool that Allen wasn't doing the job effectively enough and is now a squad option because of it.

I wouldn't say "role model", but I'd expect him to be doing a much better job than the one Osman currently does in that role.

If Barry is the holding player, McCarthy has to be the one who is more agile and "up and down" in midfield, offering more to attack and defense phases of play.

I was thinking Tubey might have in mind Wilshere rather than Marty Feldman.

That's a fair shout, but a bit deeper than that and less dynamic in possession.

I'm not expecting McCarthy to be a box to box midfielder in the conventional sense, but I expect him to offer something going forward and in possession other than possession recycling.

And that's why I pointed out what worried me about him in that cameo, and I hope I don't see it too often from him. We can't applaud those types of choices IMO, we should be expecting a lot more at Everton.

I blame him for every [Poor language removed] who's ever mentioned false number 9's and all the other shiite people come out with talking about a very simple game.

I wonder how man marking Barkley will work out for teams.

Meanwhile, Superkev will rip them a new anus while the lid from Barca does keep ups on their goal line and Lukaku snorts beak off their keepers wifes snatch.

Lets assume Martinez actually knows football, which he does, he currently has 4 CM on his books, Osman and Gibson, who he knew about and McCarthy and Barry who he brought in, now assuming Martinez knows players, he brought in 2 water carriers, surely if he felt he needed a "number 8" he would have tried for 1, but he got in 2 number 6s and sold a number 8, Fellaini.

IMO he plays 2 number 6s in midfield and their job is to recycle the ball over and over again, something I feel McCarthy excels at, but its very, very early doors yet, im gonna need to watch the lid for a full 90minutes before I can give him a tosh, decent or superb rating.

You can see evidence of that in his game though. He was probing forward for the RoI in their last two matches this week, for instance, and he's done this for Wigan (and McAuthur did too, tbf). If it's in his game he can build on it.

You may be expecting the finished product when (despite us paying out huge for him) he's a work in progress but with a lot to offer right now. I dont think this lad's ever going to be a Captain Fantastic figure piling forward and grabbing the game by the scruff - I dont think he has the personality for it for one thing...at least at present.

Your imagining the old 4-4-2, with a number 6 and number 8 in midfield, we dont play that system, we play 4-2-3-1, with 2 wingbacks bombing on, we require our 2 in midfield to play a less expansive role within the team.
