James McCarthy

Being a passing player whose primary strength is keeping the ball is fine. The difference in quality comes in how accurate you can be, how quickly you can do it and how much pressure you can be under before either of those things breaks down. We don't really have any idea of how high McCarthy's threshold is yet and that'll pretty much determine how good he'll be for us. Talking about how expansive his game might be isn't really worthwhile at this point for me, we don't know what he's going to be asked to do.

Football is the simplest game in the word, pass and move, give and go etc etc. Martinez is trying to bring this in and one of the basic, fundamental things you teach kids when they first start playing is 'play the way your facing'.

I refuse to be negative towards a player who does the basics well and keeps posession and the ball moving. If playing the way your facing means going backwards or sideways then that will do for now. Teams cant score when they havent got the ball, i love this new way of playing.

laughing at anyone who makes ridiculous judgements on players based on 20 minutes when were under the cosh against one of the best teams in the league. I defy anyone to tell me that they watched McCarthy for the full 20 odd minutes...and i mean just watched him. So not what he done when the ball came to him or near him as most fans will do as they watch the match...i mean watch him and only him every minute. What he done when we broke, what he done when he was nowhere near the ball, how he moved into space and made passes impossible.

i dont beleive anyone in the ground done that, SKY dont even do that anymore with player cam.

I'm not sure what you actually mean, but what words are you speaking of exactly?

I'd like to know exactly what you think I've said about the lad.
On the ludicrous basis of a 20 minute cameo you said you were very very unimpressed, and had long term concerns, bat **** stuff

Vast majority were 5-10 yards, which is what he should have been doing as we needed him to retain possession and kill off the game. There was one decent pass in to Mirallas and one bad one which was intercepted on the left easily.

I am not saying he had a bad game at all, I'm just saying he did the bare bones of what you'd expect from a Premier League midfielder and not much else. But I'm not really talking about the performance, I'm talking about instances of play that I hope aren't indicative of his playing style long term.

"Instances of play"?? Earlier on it was one "crab pass" you were moaning about! As I said earlier give the lad a break, he was on the field for twenty minutes quite clearly under orders to do a particular job which he did pretty well!

Nope, it was on the basis of watching him for four years in the Premier League, rating the player but hoping he doesn't duck into his shell at a bigger club.

Nope, it was the crab pass and a header he took on early when stooping low to avoid the responsibility of taking possession and thinking about a positive thrust forward. To a lesser extent, I was worried about him bottling a challenge (not much of a concern as he doesn't do it regularly) and a very indecisive through ball attempt to Mirallas that didn't have a prayer of coming off.

So no, it wasn't just "one crab pass" I highlighted.

But it's not based on that one twenty minute cameo. Why the hell would I - I laughed at people who did the exact same thing with Ross Barkley vs. Chelsea last year.

I was watching for things I find both positive and negative about his game based on watching him a fair bit in the Premier League over the last four years.

I found things that he did negatively to comment on. It doesn't mean I'm "judging" him, it means they happened and it's worth pointing out and watching for them to be worked out of his game.

People are refusing to read what I'm writing and hopping on the bandwagon as per usual.

Keep it clean and on topic ffs

Getting rid of that filthy avatar would help.

P.S. I reckon you'll be eating whole paragraphs, Tubey. Unless you're as committed as I was to downing Fellaini. No amount of praise in the world could change what I saw; a poor player. I'll respect your commitment the tougher you are to win over.

Nail. Head. But no, it was a 'crab' pass, whatever the hell that is. I don't recall the instance Tubey is talking about, but if James Mc was facing the touchline, and Ossie was looking ahead and could see what was 'on' then it's the correct pass to make.

What paragraphs!?

Here's one:

When Martinez arrived, I must admit that the one saving grace was that James McCarthy may follow. He´s a top young player, very able, giving us depth in central midfield in case of the disastrous scenario where Marouane Fellaini leaves for shores anew.

There's around fifty others of me rating the lad MUCH higher than 90% of the people on here. I haven't said a bad word about him

So basically being negative, nothing new there.....

So you have no idea what we're talking about but decided to call that "nail on head" - ridiculous.

I'll help you out - it was about 5 yards inside our own half, McCarthy had possession, he turned to face and then nudged a one yard pass to Osman to carry the ball instead of doing so himself. There was no obvious tactical reason for doing so.

It may turn out to be a one off, but it's worth keeping an eye out for, because he did the same in his early days at Wigan when he looked like a scared sheep. It could even be a positive that I've pointed it now, as it could excuse poor performances in the coming months as I firmly believe McCarthy will take six months at least to find his footing here.

Yeah, I'm negative...

Alcaraz is very highly rated by those who have watched him in depth, whilst Kone - not the most glamorous of strikers - is experienced and has seen it all at the top level of the game and once commanded a near £10m fee from Sevilla.

....let´s use our ol´ noggins here - we´re not going to sign Titus Bramble-esque footballers folks. Martinez has a brain, he knows the talent he has at his disposal; he´ll spend to improve the squad.

"In Moyes We Trust" became a disingenuous mantra; "In Martinez We Trust" should become a similar one. Let´s trust him to bring in more wheat, and get rid of more chaff.

Get lost lad.
