At the price we've paid he's going to be starting week in week out.

Why is he?? That such a short minded view your taking.

You'v got to remember he's 22 and not the finished article. Yet at the same time he's got bags of PL experience. He will get plenty of time in the pitch due to gibsons injury record but for this season is imagine Gibson and Barry will be the first choice if fit and on form. That doesn't mean he's a waste of money.

I know we're not used to having squad players who are equal to first 11 players but that's how we are finally. Barry Gibson and Mcarthy will compete/challange and rotate as RM sees fit. Just like the teams above us deal with every week.

You think Fellaini will play every week at utd? No he won't and he cost twice what Mcarthy did.

I dont see it, tbh.

We're not going to spend out 13M on a player and have him as an understudy. That's the sort of thing a Chelsea or City can afford to do. Martinez rates him highly and he brings stuff to the party neither Barry nor Gibson do. I can see McCarthy and Barry being the established CM duo as we move further into the season.

I seriously think everbody on this forum will be eating humble pie by the end of this season. McCarthy is going to be a fantastic player. He is not a deep lying midfielder hence we got Barry in as he and Gibson will do that job. McCarthy is a box to box midfielder who can grab the game by the scuff of the neck and has a exceptional engine and will put a shift in. He will be the one running our midfield and will be a massive step up from Ossie.

Sounds like we just signed Jack Rodwell for £13m.

I'm going to go on Youtube now and hope to discover that he has more to his game than just working hard.

There will be more mixing and matching, perhaps dependent on the side we're playing. You could really see a midfield with some pairing of the three in any situation, each provides a certain trait that the others don't. Like Gibson's passing, something we've sorely missed.

To be fair we might have pay a few millions more than we want, but at the end of the day he might be the only viable alternative to us.

After all we don't (and won't) have the business acumen of Daniel Levy of the Spurs; and thankfully we don't have a shambolic transfer policy like what Woodward demonstrated at Salford. We don't have the clout to attract the best players, and we have to stand with it for the time being.

Don't know if anyone else has done this but I checked out a couple of Wigan forums to see what the reaction to them selling McCarthy was like. Most of them seem to see it as an excellent piece of business for a decent player with a lot of flaws. They don't seem that upset about losing him, basically.

Personally I'm not at all unhappy with the purchase and think he'll do well for us, but if we'd got him as well as a ball-winner in the Fellaini/Fernando mould I would have been made up.

Ya, thats the exact place to go to determine a players ability, he's playing a full match on Friday night, might be the better option.

The boy can get round the pitch and keep us moving. Barry can cover the back four, Gibson can get about and pick a pass too, chuck in Barkley as well and all of a sudden we have lots of options. Brilliant.

No offence to Wigan fans intended (there will be some reading this thread), but McCarthy is now at a club with technically superior players and it could of been a case of him being held back at Wigan by what was around him.

It wouldn't be the first time in football that a player has been more advanced than the rest of his team.

Felli will play every minute of every game hes fit and not suspended, McCarthy the same.

Neither Club has any quality in CM.

I can remember plenty saying they got a good deal from Baines too and that he wasn't all that. Some fans will always be a little bitter when they've lost a good player.
