James McCarthy

McCarthy topped Carrick in ball retention last season so he can obviously pass the ball. He didn't bottle out of a tackle on Saturday. The lad got to the ball before Luiz and tried to clip it past him and it didn't work. Imagine sitting next to you! it must be a barrel of laughs

Not necessarily. It just means he can complete short, simple passes. Joe Allen and even Phil Neville have achieved 90%+ success rates with barely putting a pass over 10 yards and/or forward all game. Gareth Barry will have a very high pass percentage rate this year for the same reason - not because he's a good passer, but because his job will be to break up play and distribute short.

So what lad, I put on here we should have went for dos santos... he played for barca but people on here called him sh1t even though he would get in our team EASY.

So what? So people were wrong to call Dos Santos sh*t, and you are wrong to be whinging about McCarthy and Martinez recruitments imo.

Dos Santos is a very very talented, but very very inconsistent footballer. I have seen him at every club he has played for bar his spell at Ipswich and I can assure you he would not walk into our team easily. He'd drive you mad with greediness/laziness more times than do something class.

But thats also wrong.

It means he had a good ball retention rate with the passes he did make. Thats all.

It doesn't say anything of whether they are long or short, difficult or easy.

Fair enough. But I did say "not necessarily" - I think it's fair to say that players with a high percentage passing rate are likely to deal in short passes more often than most.

For example, Barkley will give the ball away a lot more than a McCarthy will simply because his role is more expansive.

Steven Gerrard will have lower passing stats than Joe Allen but that doesn't mean Allen is a more proficient overall passer - it just means he's not attempting the raking passes or ambitious through balls.

I think people are getting a bit silly with stats now, you can manipulate them to get your point across. One of my customers who I go and see pays for the opta stats online, according to the stats from the Chelsea game Osman done better than Barry at practically everything.

Anyway, Barca nearly signed him lol. I bet a scout checked him out.

Completely agree.

Yeah true. On the Osman thing for example...I saw that on a few occasions in the first half he had a poor touch, or almost got himself into trouble near his own box but managed to get away with it and made the pass. The stats will show all of this as a completed pass...nothing else...whereas in the stands you are bricking it and wondering what the hell he is doing, then breathing a sigh of relief. Stats are great, but you need to be watching the game to get the whole picture of course.

Not that I'm on the Ossie-bashing bandwagon. Had a decent game in the end overal.

Anyways on McCarthy I just think he is a very good young footballer who will only get better playing for us, and we will all see that clearly using our eyeballs to watch actual games.

Not only that, the stats are sometimes completely wrong. There was one that sticks out in my mind with Phil Neville - he attempted to lay a ball back, under no pressure, but got it completely wrong and put it out for a corner, with the ball 10 yards away from his intended target.

The stats called it a clearance

I think that just means that stats cant account for Phil Neville, nor can you put a number on his influence and all he does without the ball, or on the pitch or in the right direction.

Barcelona nearly signed McCarthy when he was at Hamilton as did Liverpool, so don't just write off his playing style because his name isn't Joao Maresca. Very good young player who has had four years of regular premier league football. He will be a great signing. I reckon the Barry-McCarthy partnership will be outstanding once it has gelled properly in a month or two.

IMO he will end up a very good signing/player for us. No he may not end up being a world beater like many expect him to be due to a 13M fee, but if he spends 10yrs here, with minimal injuries, as even just a good to very good player it will be great business. His lower wage demands over foreign counter parts chip away at that fee anyway.

And to say he can't improve because he's already played a couple of yrs of PL football with a ****e Wigan side is ridiculous.
