James McCarthy

why lad? half of them are in Spain because its a better footballing league who pass the ball.

McCarthy topped Carrick in ball retention last season so he can obviously pass the ball. He didn't bottle out of a tackle on Saturday. The lad got to the ball before Luiz and tried to clip it past him and it didn't work. Imagine sitting next to you! it must be a barrel of laughs

to me to you, to me to you.
Don't lie to yourself, Distin couldn't take someone on who is closing him down and then slide it through the middle into our strikers feet, same with jagielka.
Distin hasn't got long left anyway so who is our backup for him?

Why would our centre backs need to take someone on? That's the whole idea of trying to pass the ball out. So you don't have to do this?

What role does McCarthy play? yes he knows the prem ect but lets be honest, he isn't very good from what I've seen about him.
I'm not saying he is crap because he bottled out of a 50/50 vs chelsea but in your Debut vs Chelsea, I highly doubt many people would bottle out
I would consider him a box to box midfielder with the ability to play deep, break up play, win possession. He can pick a pass and brake forward fast. You say you've seen him loads (25 times or something) because you watch all football and you've come to the conclusion that he's not very good? We'll have to agree to disagree then. I doubt he'll be quite the level of Keane or Viera but he will be a very good midfielder.

If he was Belgian you'd all be creaming your pants ffs
Based on our recent history with players from Belgium, if McCarthy would be from Belgium we would never look into signing him, as there would be much better players available for less money.

Martinez knows McCarthy, McCarthy knows the Premier league, McCarthy is a full international. He's a versatile midfielder with lots of potential. He'll settle quickly in the squad as he already knows Coleman, Duffy and Gibson. We probably payed over the odds but not by much. I think He'll be worth alot more than 13 million in a couple of seasons.
He is not versatile - in his case its more about not having a true position and doing a little bit of everything. Not necessary a poor thing, just not when you pay 13m for somebody.

And I'm not sure about his potential - he looks to me like a 23 years old veteran, as he is really experienced. I really have my doubts if he can get significantly better as player.

Also, I could actually make a bet that we will never make a profit on James McCarthy. But it would be a really long term one, plus difficult to judge if we would keep him for many years.

And to finish my rant - knowing Premier League don't mean much, it's really overrated cliche, for managers as well for players.

PS. For one I really think he did okay in his cameo against Chelsea, don't have any problem with his performance then.

McCarthy is versatile,he can play a number of positions and do it well. At Wigan because of a lack of numbers and a lack of quality he played a position where he anchored midfield.
At Everton there will be greater flexibility about the role he will be allowed to play, and in time will settle into a favoure role as most midfielders do. .In time I think he will become a box to box midfielder in the style of Keane,Viera or Gerrard.

How good will he become, only time will tell.

Barcelona nearly signed McCarthy when he was at Hamilton as did Liverpool, so don't just write off his playing style because his name isn't Joao Maresca. Very good young player who has had four years of regular premier league football. He will be a great signing. I reckon the Barry-McCarthy partnership will be outstanding once it has gelled properly in a month or two.

i think with mccarthy, gibson and barry whichever two are picked are a perfect fit to sit and hold the midfield in a 4-2-3-1 and let the other 4 create chances and with the likes of lukaku, mirallas, barkley, delofeu we are going to give a few teams an absolute spanking this year.
