James McCarthy

Yes hes not got bags of ability but he keeps things ticking along nicely and these players are sometimes undervalued and under appreciated in football but are extremely effective in what they do.

I think he was excellent in the first half, and a bit anonymous at times in the second. Early signs are good - he just needs a long-term partner to complement his game.

In an ideal world Lundstram will come on sufficiently to make a dream trio of Barkley, himself and McCarthy.

The last couple of games my one criticism was that we seemed unsure when passing out from the back. But tonight it looked like Barry, and on a more long term basis, McCarthy could be the answer to that

the last couple of games were his first couple of games. He was playing in a new side, with a new manager, trying to play a different system.

to criticise him for being unsure is petty beyond belief

He needs to become a bit more physical, I don't think he has got a single yellow card yet.
Ill discipline is nothing to encourage. In fact, I'm all the more impressed given his relentless tenacity.

I do love the solid British & Irish core we've got to our side. If you count this game as a weekend fixture, we had;

Newcastle - 0 (+1 sub )
Man City - 2
Liverpool - 3
Chelsea - 3
Arsenal - 3 (+1 sub
Aston Villa - 3 (+1 sub
Swansea - 4
Spurs - 4 (+1 sub
Man Utd - 5
Fulham - 5
Southampton - 5 (+1 sub
Sunderland - 6
Stoke - 4 (+3 subs)
West Ham - 6 (+1 sub
West Brom - 6 (+1 sub
Hull - 7 (+1 sub
Norwich - 7 (+1 sub
Everton 7 (+2 subs)
Cardiff - 6 (+3 subs)
Crystal Palace - 6 (+3 subs)

That puts us in the top 3 and comfortably ahead of anyone in the top 5.

Think he played great tonight, just shows what we've been missing from Leon Osman over the past decade, sad as that sounds. I'm full of confidence if I think of McCarthy, Barry and Gibson fighting it out for two midfield slots behind Barkley in the attacking role. Obviously Leon will con his way in there somehow, but it's nice to dream. Good solid start for McCarthy at Everton, good lad.

So happy that people are coming around to him.

Obvious how important he was to us in the West Ham game. He operates at 50% higher revs than anyone else in our team.

Effortless athleticism coupled with great skill.

He is one of our most important players.
