James McCarthy

Yaya doesn't play the role that McCarthy does, neither do Dembeler or Alli. McCarthy would get in those sides as a defensive mid (Spurs as you said a toss up between him and Dier)

Arsenal would definitley have McCarthy in. This idea he's poor on the ball is ridiculous. Look at that superb little pass into Lukaku against Stoke as an example of that, or some of his throughballs to Barkley. It's not his strongest asset, no, but he's in now way poor at it.

He's at his best defending and then making third-man runs from deep. He's quicker than a lot on here give him credit for as well. Most managers would have him in their starting XIs, and if not at least in and around the first team.
Nah, he has his uses and on first year form yeah he's unstoppable but he's been nowhere near thr level in 18 months, just couldn't see him getting in any of the sides listed

I rate McCarthy highly in our squad, but agree with all the above. McCarthy is a menace to the opposition, and is a hard player to play against I suspect but the above are better players.

I'd say he's better than Fernando, Dier (who is a superb young player playing a different role really), Coquelin and Mikel.

Dembele and Alli are much more box-to-box players than McCarthy, as is Toure.

Kante has been great this season and yeh has a bit more to his game all-round but McCarthy is key to us. We're a better side with him in it and i'm pretty sure in the highly unlikely event he became available a lot of teams would be interested.

He was relatively poor last season and blighted by injuries. Had a slow start this year but looked to be back to his best and then go that injury at Bournemouth (surprise surprise we manage to concede 3 times in 20 minutes after he goes off...). Came back vs Stoke and looked leggy and that set him back again (though only after that great assist for Rom). Been injured since, came back in to start against Carlisle and we've won five of our six games since, conceding twice and scoring 14 times. The stats speak for themselves this season.

Besic has looked good and like he can offer a different role to McCarthy that may well suit us more in different games if the lad can get over his hamstring injuries, but if it cam down to a straight toss-up between the two I'd have to go with McCarthy.

McCarthy is a very good player, don't for a second think I feel otherwise, but those stats only tell a part of the story..

You have 11 players, the manager and the opposition that all go towards deciding whether you keep a clean sheet or win a game, McCarthy may help more than his replacement but is not responsible for the wins or clean sheets alone. Others will quote Howard being out as the reason we do well, or the manager changing tactics, or getting breaks from the ref, good fortune, poor opposition etc... using team stats to prove one players ability doesn't quite work imo.

He is quality and I think he should be played, but I don't think he is world class, or even as good as most of those quoted.

He's defo worth more than 13m now though. Good purchase from Martinez

I agree on that mate in that of course he is not the only reason, but he's definitely a big part of it.

Fair enough on the other players, that's just opinions so they'll always vary.

A very good player that would get into the midfields of most sides in the league

You're spot on. Was trying to quote a more accurate post for my own opinion but couldn't find the one I was looking for.

A lot of football fans don't understand the game enough or pay attention to players who a) aren't hyped up by the media or b) show flashes of brilliance on the ball. My guess is that if McCarthy was playing for a more fashionable club or one of the higher teams in the league and the media praised him, certain sections of our fanbase would pay him more attention. That's why Kante (who from the little I have seen of him has been excellent) is getting a lot of praise this season. Yes he's been great, but fans of other clubs have only started discussing him due to media hype and because Leicester are now under the spot light. Would all these experts have noticed him if he had been playing for 11th placed Leicester with him putting in the exact same performances? I don't think they would.

Aaron Lennon is a perfect example of where certain fans would easily miss his value to a team. Since he's been in the side he's been excellent for far more reasons than his goals. Because he's scored a few he's in everyone's good books because goals stand out. However, he's done a lot more than just that and the protection he offers Coleman and his general work rate has been absolutely vital to our good run of form. If he hadn't scored in that period, he'd have still have been one of our best players. But the MOTD watchers from the media etc and our more clueless fans wouldn't have noticed him.

McCarthy can be hit and miss in games for me. But he's one of our most important players and all of the results we've had since he's been here have proved that.

Kante is a very good example you highlight. You ask Leicester fans who their best player has been and many say Kante. What he does is similar to what McCarthy does when at his best. For me it shows how important it is to get a very strong defensive midfielder player in your side.

Kante also can offer an awful lot on the ball

McCarthy is great player with up and down periods like any player . I m Besic fan and I really believe he can be big player for Everton on CM box to Box ,he play games with hard teams this few that he played and played great. But I really believe even do Barry has a great season that McCharty and Besic will be Atomic duo for Everton.
