James McCarthy

gibson offers more going forward than what mccarthy does defensively is the simplest way to put it. agree with what mkrudden said about gibson and barry not being a pair though, they're both too similar and immobile for that, especially since gibbo drinks 8 pints of Guinness every night these days.

Didn't he give the ball into Lukakus feet for the Kone goal?

All about opinions mate as I repeatedly say, but I think you're being very harsh on McCarthy.
Just think our fans can massively overrate him, h can be extremely important for us in the way he can break things up, but he really needs to add more to his game when in possession

But isn't that why we have a squad, it wasn't working yesterday despite Deulofeu's best efforts so Martinez tweeaked it and we got the result. If Coleman had been fit he might have been able to provide that spark himself.

Think one of the reasons why Martinez was so keen to sign Cleverley was that he hoped he could help Ross with the more creative midfiielder demands.
But certain players are undroppable

Theres a lot of games this season when teams will camp in their half and bary and mccarthy together will hinder us

Need gibson or ross in their to give us some drive, impetus and creativity from deep

Why ? his job is to use his speed to destroy the oppo's attacks, break up their rhythm ,win the ball and give it too someone in the team who can hurt the opposition. Take the engine out of the engine room and we are finished as a competitive outfit. Did anyone hear the criticism the arsenal fans were making when their 2 centre mids were arteta and Flamini last week. James is probably the 1st name on the team sheet every week and until the manager want's to commit footballing suicide it will probably stay like that.

I'm not sure what it is that people don't understand here.

I get that he's good at what he does. I get that somebody needs to do what he does. I think he needs to do more in order to be a top class midfielder.

Firstly, i'm not sure that he reads the game particularly well. See the goals conceded against Watford and City this season for examples of where he's sold himself or not seen the likeliest scenario. He also often goes haring out to harry someone and gets there too late, leaving a huge gap behind him. While it's great to be pressing up the pitch, sometimes he needs to be a better judge of when to do it. If he ironed these issues out, i'd be less bothered about the attacking side of his game, but as I don't think he's an exceptional defensive shield, I think it's important that he contributes something in an attacking sense.

In the same way, we all know Lukaku scores, but we'd like to see him get a bit better at holding the ball up and doing the donkey work. We know Barkley can be fantastic at times, but it's important that he remembers to tuck in and do his defensive job at times too. There's nothing wrong with wanting a player to be more rounded.

Agree. My issue with Gibson besides the lack of fitness, is he is much more of a passenger in the defensive end. Our success this season is having a strong defense and springing on the counter. Granted it is his first action in a while but at the end of the West Brom match there were 2 chances/spells where they were applying pressure and Gibson is just kinda floating around not harrying or marking anyone. If we were in Europe or an early FA cup round I could see giving Gibson a run out, but his contract is done on the year and we shouldn't be extending him, so no need to be moving him up the depth chart.

People like to ignore it but there were a bunch of times McCarthy just stood marking space. He's not always harrying and pressing, far from it. Oh and by the way we conceded two to west brom with him in the field.
The McCarthy propaganda on this site amazes me. He's never scored 5 goals or gotten 5 assists in a season and ALWAYS looks backwards or sidewards for a pass that's usually about 6 yds.
He's David Batty.

Are you really putting him at fault for the West Brom goals? A header off a corner where Barkley left his man completely and a goal off of a series of errors by Funes Mori and Barry?

Barry is too old to be playing every game, McCarthy is so limited in possession, he rarely looks up and usually picks the nearest person to pass to, its utter crap. Hopefully Besic can step up and challenge McCarthy and Barry for the defensive midfield role. But we do need a playmaker and Gibson is probably the best passer at the club. If he can stay fit and that's a big if and get a run of games together a new contract might be fair.
