James McCarthy

He will forever be a pedestrian midfielder if he does not contribute enough offensively. Modern day defensive midfield require them to be just as good contributing in the Attack as much as defensive duty.

I think what he needs is focus and discipline. The sooner we can give that to him the more we will see him progress.

With that in mind we should start him first game v Spurs and tell him to compete for the first and second balls at all time against their midfield. Then, when the half time whistle is blown, our new fitness coach Kluitenberg should dash on the pitch and force him to the mud before removing his kecks and SODOMISING JAMES HARD for a good ten minute thrashing. Right there and then with a gusto that shows this new regime demands high octane movement.

Sub James then for the second half and let him reflect on the lesson he's just learned.

Take it from there then. We will know if he's bought into this new regime by Christmas and if not we can sell him.

"James McCarthy is a big lad, six foot, and he's a very experienced Premier league player... at a good junior club, a coach would put on a session and you learn what do do there in professional football when you're 15.

"He's playing for Ireland, Witsel's there and he's there and it can't happen.

"He's already been responsible for diving in on the touchline 50 yards from goal (for the first goal)."

Liam Brady added: "He can't afford to be rash, as he was on the first one. or he can't afford to lose his concentration as he was on the second one.

"He knew Witsel was there. You watch the ball, you watch the player... he stared at the ball and Witsel snuck in behind him and boom. The game was over then.

Giles saidL "I couldn't imagine an Italian player doing that."

Dunphy interrupted: "I couldn't imagine any good pro doing that. I played for Millwall and I tell you what there would have been hell to pay on the pitch (if they did that).

"It's basic."

I still think he can offer something to us and I think a proper manager will define a clear role for him.

He played under Roberto Martinez for six years and he still didnt have a clear, defined role within both Wigan and Everton. What is he? He's got the energy to be the box to box type, he's been deployed as a defensive midfielder but never really gets told to sit like one, he's not got the passing to be a deep lying playmaker, just what is James McCarthy? Think Ronald will either flog him, or actually tell him he's one specific role and coach him accordingly.

Are you using Giles and Dunphy as a weapon to criticise McCarthy ?.. seriously ?

I wouldn't trust either of those to make a proper cup of tea...never mind critique a player.

The same manager who made Stones a £40m and Lukaku £60m player.........but I see what your saying.
No he didn't, if anything he harmed their value cause they were gash for large parts of last season, Stones in particular, due to his lack of management ability.
