I'm puzzled here, I always thought Belfast was in Northern Ireland, so being as proud as you appear, why would you of chosen The Republic of Ireland instead??

Because I believe in a United Ireland.

OK?

And I think you'll find around half the people Belfast support the Republic rather then the Northern team.

As an NI fan, I've no issue with a player deciding they'd rather play for the republic, that's up to them. But what does really annoy us all is the likes of Mcclean who use our setup from u15s right through to u21s and then at very last minute decide to reject a cap and go off to the south, whilst making bigoted political points in the process. Players have every right to choose who they want to represent should they have a choice. But there's right and wrong ways of going about it.

Not so anymore mate. I work in Belfast, live just outside it, and can confirm its a very different place these days. Michael O'Neill has really done a great job in making the team acceptable to all. There's really no reason to choose to defect now. Unless you're a James Mclean type who seems to think football is a platform for political point scoring. Which its not.

He was correct in what he said, half of Belfast supports the Republic of Ireland. Michael O'Neill has done a fantastic job,and I cheered NI on at the Euro's, but your comment re McClean is misguided. We are free to choose which "Ireland" we represent. He may express a view that is different to yours but it is unfair to dismiss it as political point scoring.

I got to NI games with catholic mates. His half of belfast comment is not correct in my experience. May have been in the days before my time I'd imagine though!

I think O'Neill has been a breath of fresh air. As for picking who you represent, I agree entirely it's personal choice as it was with mccarthy. But I think you should make the decision early, so a nation does not spend thousands developing your career only for you to go elsewhere.

And back on topic.... Sell if we're bringing in a replacement, keep if we aren't. But I think we need better than James.

McClean thumbing his nose at the poppy police is a highlight of every season. The fume is ridiculous.

I made a personal vow not to be dragged into politics on this site, I love it but it doesn't need it. He is free to choose, surely the point of the war was freedom? Jon snow coined it well with "poppy fascism".

A white poppy is best, respect all the fallen. A life is a life no matter what.

I am talking about the supporters Tim, not the players.

Take it from me, you cross that river and go up the Falls Road or Andersonstown and you will find precious few people supporting NI.

And it is the same in the likes of Newry, Derry and other nationalist areas of the North.

There is overwhelming support for the Republic in the Catholic heartlands.

It is sad there is no consensus when it comes to the football but that's just the way it is :(
