Surely the national team has preference over club when it comes to competitive matches. If you are selected to play for your country (Moonin; can we take it as read you will say "It is not his country") and you are not injuried then you get suspended for the next club game.
I could be wrong but I think the rules say if you are fit and picked then you play. If McCarthy is injuried then there is no issue, he can't play.
The Irish medical staff and the player will know if he is fit to play. Koeman made a mistake in announcing this to the press. If that is the biggest mistake he makes for us he will be grand.

I agree with you that is clubs who pull the strings and think this is why FIFA give precedence to International federations now. The champions league is the real lure now whereas 30 years ago it was Internationals that were the real achievement.
