James McCarthy

It's hard to know exactly what's going on with McCarthy and whether or not he remains committed to Everton but as i've mentioned before, Koeman's comments do not sound to me like someone who doesn't value McCarthy's presence as a squad player.

I think Koeman is well aware that McCarthy is good back up for Gueye and Barry and wants him fit. I just hope McCarthy sees sense this time.

yeh I agree

McCarthy probably sees himself as first-team quality and that's fair enough, but given the form of Barry and Gueye he needs to prove that.

Unfortunately, due to injuries (but only down to that) he hasn't had the chance to do so.

Pretty sure he'd have been playing a lot more if he'd been fit.

Playing wise they both were successful with Koeman having the definite edge with his La Liga titles and the Euro88 win.
Managing wise O'Neill has the definite edge. Lets's leave aside the SPL and Eredivisie titles they won as they're practically worthless. Koeman has a Spanish Cup to his name outside pf that; O'Neill took a club like Leicester and won two LCs with them, and took Celtic to the UEFA Cup final, and internationally qualified the RoI for Euro2016.

LOL

From what Koeman just said that's certainly how it looks.

Koeman said he'd advised McCarthy to stay and get fit, but it's up to the player.

Bye James.

Pure guessing. It strikes me as if Ronald told McCarthy he is not first choice any longer and has to fight for his place. McCarthy may not like the sound of it and looked to leave on deadline day. We missed out on Witsel and later Sissoko so McCarthy remains instead of leaving for Crystal Palace.

O'Neill IN! ffs

I dont blame McCarthy for wanting to play for Ireland. Koeman wanted rid of him, he's gonna be a bit part player so he will grab any game time he can especially for his country.

lol...you are a master in speciousness

He didn't bring it up - he got asked a question and gave an honest answer.

O'Neill didn't 'have to react'...

Nobody worth their salt will be basing his international managerial career on 'reacting' to club managers

So when Koeman gets asked a question in a press conference he has to react but when O'Neill get asked a question in a press conference he doesn't have to react.
In regard to nobody worth their salt would base their international career on reacting to club managers. Do you not think O'Neill was trying to show that he was operating from a position of strength in contradicting the club manager.
But I will reiterate my point; has Norman's statement or O'Neill's reaction helped the situation in regard to McCarthy, personally I don't think it has.
Let me put forward a scenario; Everton approach the Republic and express concerns about McCarthy playing too much as he recovers from injury. He starts for them and they are doing well; so O'Neill thinks about our concern and maybe takes him off. Now, because of the press attention, if he withdraws him in a game it may be a sign of weakness, will other club managers expect to be able to dictate how often and when their players play.
I am a big supporter of Koeman but, in this instance, I think he could have handled things better.

Both managers have heaped pressure onto McCarthy but in their shoes I can't say I would act any differently re his call up. Both managers clearly are interested in giving him game time or this would never be an issue.

It would have better had this been handled in a phone call rather than via the media but such is the sound bite football world we live in.

For my money, come match day, he will be genuinely not be fit enough to play.

McCarthy chose his country over his club as is his right. As an Evertonian I will support every other midfielder over McCarthy.

It's all BS anyway. McCarthy is not in Koemans plans for the future. I have a feeling all the parties involved know that (player, club manager, national manager). In that respect I can see why the player is saying he's fit to play and the national manager is playing him. Id do exactly the same as McCarthy if I'd have been seen as surplus to requirements in the last window. Koeman needs to knock it on the head. Which, tbf, he's indicated he will do today. An embarrassing episode hopefully at an end.

McCarthy will do as he's told by Koeman or he can sit in the reserves until January and then be flogged. It's clear he hasn't impressed Ronald so far and if he wants to stay here he needs to prove he's willing sacrifice something in order to show how much he wants back into our starting XI.

And O'Neill can pipe down the old fart, never liked him or and his smarmy attitude. Laughed my balls off when he got linked by some bookmakers with managing us in the summer after Euros, as if we'd want him. He's achieved next to nothing since leaving Leicester yet is spoken about in the media as some sort all-time-great for some reason. The two League Cups he won aside he's not even as a good a manager as Moyes and that was proven when we competed with and finished above his Villa team for a few seasons. To this day he still harps on about that 3-2 win at Goodison (where Young and Agbonlahor first created their reputations as the most overrated English players in the Premier League) as one of his all-time top career wins. Says a lot about the wee Irish tosser.

Couldn't agree more. As a player and manager I always thought of him as an obnoxious ,slightly demented, twisted leprechaun. Didn't he also profess some sort of affection for the RS at one point?

I'm not sure how O'Neill can be so sure that playing all those minutes for Ireland, coming straight off an injury lay off, didn't then contribute to the follow up injury?

I mean, it wasn't as if there was a massive gap between the two situations is there?

Koeman's medical team said that the two were linked, and I think it's highly rational to think the two were connected

If you're coming off an injury it stands to reason that if you do too much too soon you could end up getting injured again pretty quickly

Look at Oviedo. He was rushed back last season after a pretty long injury lay off and was made to play 120 minutes against Barnsley then another 90 against Spurs in the space of 4 days. Surprise, surprise, he was back injured not soon after. This time he hasn't been rushed back so quickly and has thus far not gone down with an injury again

Everything Koeman is saying is completely rational to me. Maybe the way he's said it hasn't helped the situation, but I don't think he's being unreasonable at all. It is better for Jimmy Mac in this instance to sit the international break out, not travel, and take time to get himself healthy

Ultimately it will benefit Everton, Ireland and Jimmy Mac himself if he can get back to full fitness and stay healthy. It's not unreasonable at all to suggest that travelling for international duty, even if he doesn't play much, and getting out of his routine at this critical stage in his recovery is probably not the best move to make

As always, the media has looked for a story here and blown this one out of proportion, essentially putting both managers on the spot and stirring the pot so that there'd be a story

O'Neill and Koeman should have a private chat between themselves and smooth things over, and both managers should let Jimmy Mac know that the most important thing in all this is his own health and that if he thinks travelling with have a negative effect on his recovery he should say so and sit this one out without any repercussions for doing so

I'd bin McCarthy off asap if he doesn't return to Everton immediately once the international break begins. Disgusting behaviour when he has missed loads of games and continues to risk further injury that could prevent him from missing even more games, while being paid very handsomely by his club. It'd be a completely different story if he'd have been playing for us recently, but he hasn't been fit and hasn't been available. Tell him it's his decision to make, but if he chooses country over club in this circumstance he won't play for us again.
