I'm not sure how O'Neill can be so sure that playing all those minutes for Ireland, coming straight off an injury lay off, didn't then contribute to the follow up injury?

I mean, it wasn't as if there was a massive gap between the two situations is there?

Koeman's medical team said that the two were linked, and I think it's highly rational to think the two were connected

If you're coming off an injury it stands to reason that if you do too much too soon you could end up getting injured again pretty quickly

Look at Oviedo. He was rushed back last season after a pretty long injury lay off and was made to play 120 minutes against Barnsley then another 90 against Spurs in the space of 4 days. Surprise, surprise, he was back injured not soon after. This time he hasn't been rushed back so quickly and has thus far not gone down with an injury again

Everything Koeman is saying is completely rational to me. Maybe the way he's said it hasn't helped the situation, but I don't think he's being unreasonable at all. It is better for Jimmy Mac in this instance to sit the international break out, not travel, and take time to get himself healthy

Ultimately it will benefit Everton, Ireland and Jimmy Mac himself if he can get back to full fitness and stay healthy. It's not unreasonable at all to suggest that travelling for international duty, even if he doesn't play much, and getting out of his routine at this critical stage in his recovery is probably not the best move to make

As always, the media has looked for a story here and blown this one out of proportion, essentially putting both managers on the spot and stirring the pot so that there'd be a story

O'Neill and Koeman should have a private chat between themselves and smooth things over, and both managers should let Jimmy Mac know that the most important thing in all this is his own health and that if he thinks travelling with have a negative effect on his recovery he should say so and sit this one out without any repercussions for doing so
Good post.
