2020/21 James Rodriguez

Best way to prove they were all wrong is on the pitch James.
Have a cob on every week in the Premier League and make opposition players look bad.

Retirement looks imminent. Or competing at the very top at least. His body is shot.

Amazing some of the whinging regarding James’s fitness (some going as far as calling him lazy, or faking injury). He was a free signing for a reason. A 29 year old with world class ability in prime condition wouldn’t be here.

Since the 2016 season he has played 22, 8, 23, 20 and 23 league games. Given he’s getting older and is in a much more physically demanding league that he was able to make 23 games is more than expected. He can still pick a pass, but the main issue is those 23 games he’s played in more running is asked of his teammates.

Not at Everton. It’s probably the only club where a half injured James is still working harder than half his team mates. The Anfield derby he probably did more work closing down than any of the forwards or midfielders did. When he goes off and Siggurdson or Gomes comes on it’s not as though they do any more work than him.

James is the absolute least of our problems. There’s a lot of criticism that should go towards a 40 million pound Icelandic slug, than before we start having a pop at our best player on a free signing.

It will be exciting to follow this soap opera. One thing is if he is struggling with injuries, but another thing is if they think his general form is too bad to play football at a high level. It seems a little unclear. In any case, it is very professional that the coaching team sets the standard so high, and requires the players to be 100 percent.

It seems to me that Rodriguez didn’t think, in his head, that he was fit to play for Everton in the last few weeks he was here, but a week later, home in Colombia, he thought, in his head, he was fit enough to play for his country. I don’t think he was telling lies, but it looks like he wanted to play for his country more than the club who pays his wages, and I understand he has a big affinity to his country but hardly any to Everton, that doesn’t seem right to me.

This makes it sounds like he is machiavellian in nature. I see it more like he wasn't fit (thus the report from Everton to say so) but he was banking on being OK in another 2/3 weeks to play a part.

Even if he was deemed fit for the City game - although I can't see what would have changed between then and now for him to be - international tournaments are once every 2 years and he probably only has 2 left (as in one he has a chance to pick up a trophy in), so why risk a one off PL gane where we were always getting beat anyhow?

Fair enough mate, if it was just one game, he played one hour in the last six games, because of a twinge, nothing too serious according to Carlo, before one game started, who said he’ll be ready for the next game, he wasn’t, or the next one, because of tiredness, then fatigue for the City game, before he flew home, where after a short rest he declared himself fit to the Colombian manager, who said in a roundabout way, not fit enough for this team I’m afraid, maybe he travel to watch them when they do play, to reward his team mates and his adoring Colombian fans.

Very true.

Below are my thoughts on James’ situation. The GOT women will have to forgive me for the double post.

My feelings is that I would have rather having James on the squad, at least on the bench in case of really needing him. He can be such a magician when on the field and we have some very difficult games ahead of us specially with WC qualifying matches that we are playing next week against Peru and Argentina that we must win. But I also think James fancies himself to be of above everyone else because of his status and it seems he rubbed people the wrong way, not only here at Everton for leaving for Colombia before the season was over but also with the Colombian Football Federation and Rueda because when he arrived in Colombia he took a break to hangout with family instead of joining Rueda and his other teammates that were already training for the upcoming matches. As UptheTofees has already posted. It also seems that Everton medical team contacted Colombia’s coaching staff to let them know that James was not ready to play. That’s when they informed James and the Federation issued the statement. At that point I think James should have understood that a medical decision was taken for his own health benefits and he should have not responded to the news by issuing his statement because now I’m afraid Rueda may not call on him soon again given his prima Donna attitude. I love James, I have followed him for many years and he is a magnificent footballer but I do think fame and money has gotten a bit to his head and he feels he should have preferred status but the reality is that football is a team game and everyone should earn their place. Maybe this experience will make him reconsider his status and humbles him a little bit.

With regards to Everton I think this is great news for the Blues because James will now see in Ancelotti a manager that continues trusting on him, unlike Rueda he would think, and would want to do everything to prove Colombia’s manager made a mistake. Which means he would try to get fully fit this summer since he won’t be playing. The rest will be good for his body and he will be ready to begin the preseason with Everton in much better form that had he played for Colombia. I really don’t think he will be leaving Everton. One thing about James is that he has always met his contract obligations and has never left before the time he signed for. So I do believe he will be here next season and he will be more energetic than ever because he would want a spot in the NT squad for next year’s World Cup qualifiers and more importantly a spot to be part of the World Cup.

So overall while I feel bad for James because I know he has great passion for the NT and would have wished playing the upcoming matches, the conclusion of both Everton and Colombia’s NT is that he is not ready so he needs to heal and get better without any more tantrums or statements. He needs to accept the coach’s decision and work hard so he can comeback and have his best season at Everton and with Colombia.
