I tried googling the Portuguese window and can't even find anything that says it's still open!

Turkey surely won't happen. How would any Turkish club afford his wages.
open till 22nd sep according to that https://en.as.com/en/2021/08/29/soccer/1630224255_602750.html

Are there any later transfer deadlines?

There are a handful of top leagues where they are still authorized to sign players after Aug. 31, with their respective transfer deadlines as follows:

Sept. 7: Russia

Sept. 8: Turkey

Sept. 22: Mexico, Portugal

Oct. 18: Australia

Why would he do that? There seems to be a growing assumption that James is desperate to go. The way I see it is that Benitez wanted him out.

It's a bit of both but more than Benitez, it's the club too

Club needed his wages off the books, Benitez isn't going to have him as a priority in the side and he'd have been happy to leave.

But he's here now so has to be used. If not, Benitez - who is clearly leaking stuff to his big Red mate Joyce, one way or the other - is an idiot.

Cheeky mid-October bid for James coming in from Canberra Convicts FC?

Australia it is. Nice weather s..t league. Everything on his level!

Can’t wait to see him play at Goodison.

Financially and maybe physically you can see why the club were open to him leaving.. but he’s extremely good and if Rafael can make it work we’re a much better side for it.
Extremely good? LOL. That's why they did fall over each other to get him?

The club PR spin against him was/has been incredible, and I am interested to see how they play that now it seems he's staying.

James hasn't helped, I agree, but then I can't really blame him for some of the crap.

The stuff in the press and from Benitez about James was frosty at best, so I can only imagine what was said behind closed, doors to his face.
I don't think there has been spin against JR.
It appears that he doesn't fit into the managers plans and there is no doubt that the club would have appreciated the wage savings if he left but any of the negativity that I have seen have been instigated by JR himself.

The tweet about not knowing who the club was playing at the weekend, the cryptic messages on twitch which certainly created controversy if nothing else.
I remember some on here convinced he was going to Atletico based on a post by JR himself.
The situation about flying to Colombia last season before the final game of the season didn't help either.

These are all professionals, players and management alike... players will know and accept that a new manager may want to try something different and they will then try to move to someplace new.
I don't believe there need be any rancour or bad feeling. James clearly wanted to leave when his mentor left... I think if there is bad feeling anywhere it would be with James who would correctly feel that CA left him stranded.

I think there a couple of options now, the club and James reach a monetary settlement and cancel his contract, allowing him to sign for another club.

He sits on his contract for twelve months and barely plays..... which would not be good for his football career.

He knuckles down and convinces the manager he has a role to play.... I think this may be difficult as it will probably mean James having to get far fitter and work much harder than he has done .

I think you overestimate the amount of loyalty people will hand to a player who has insulted the club and underlined how lacking in commitment he is to it. Yes there will be a hrad core of people who'll have the knives out for Benitez and use the James issue as a stick to beat him with, but it's not as if he's a club legend. He's a player who doesn't want to be here and the vast majority recognize that and will understand a manager that doesn't start him in games.
I think that is correct.
In the space of a few weeks it seems to me that a lot of the anger against Benitez has drifted away and this is in part because of results but also because of the way he seems to be going about his job.

JR , as you say, will be the stick used by some to beat Benitez.

You don’t have to be a body language expert to tell he absolutely hates playing in this league. He’s been counting down the days til he leaves since about December imo.
Everyone was convinced Iwobi hated it here and didn't care either. And everyone is convinced Keane gets rattled easy. It's pseudoscience.
