The club PR spin against him was/has been incredible, and I am interested to see how they play that now it seems he's staying.
James hasn't helped, I agree, but then I can't really blame him for some of the crap.
The stuff in the press and from Benitez about James was frosty at best, so I can only imagine what was said behind closed, doors to his face.
I don't think there has been spin against JR.
It appears that he doesn't fit into the managers plans and there is no doubt that the club would have appreciated the wage savings if he left but any of the negativity that I have seen have been instigated by JR himself.
The tweet about not knowing who the club was playing at the weekend, the cryptic messages on twitch which certainly created controversy if nothing else.
I remember some on here convinced he was going to Atletico based on a post by JR himself.
The situation about flying to Colombia last season before the final game of the season didn't help either.
These are all professionals, players and management alike... players will know and accept that a new manager may want to try something different and they will then try to move to someplace new.
I don't believe there need be any rancour or bad feeling. James clearly wanted to leave when his mentor left... I think if there is bad feeling anywhere it would be with James who would correctly feel that CA left him stranded.
I think there a couple of options now, the club and James reach a monetary settlement and cancel his contract, allowing him to sign for another club.
He sits on his contract for twelve months and barely plays..... which would not be good for his football career.
He knuckles down and convinces the manager he has a role to play.... I think this may be difficult as it will probably mean James having to get far fitter and work much harder than he has done .
