My guess is that he's a winner out of this and has made a small fortune in a signing on fee that will include some form of surreptitious payment to his old club.

How do create a legally binding contract for something that is basically illegal ?
If we offer 50m for McNeil then I might agree there is an element of compensation there, but there is no way we are giving money for a player out of contract.
