January Transfer Thread 2017

Does this entire argument hinge upon the idea that Everton's transfer budget is £25MM?

No, but thank you for bailing me out because what I wrote was genuinely awful and convoluted and it was bothering me. This is better stated.

In order to get the level of talent they desire, Everton have to sign a player outside of the ideal age range. In this case, they're spending £25 million on a 27-year old Morgan Schneiderlin.

My argument is this: I don't believe that there isn't a single central midfielder on the entire planet that is younger than Morgan Schneiderlin and potentially as good as Morgan Schneiderlin that Everton can sign for £25 million or less. And the goal for Everton should be to identify those undervalued players and develop them.

Good squad management probably combines young and (relatively) old talent. Unless you're Zatara or a FM Wunderboss, you can't only buy young players.

So rather than develop a player who in 5 years might POTENTIALLY be as good as Schneiderlin, surely it makes more sense to buy a player who isnt potentially as good, but is infact Schneiderlin?

City in the Summer bought a player with massive potential, who is currently stinking out the league, they could have spent 47.5m on somebody who would have helped them this season rather than hindering them.

Schneiderlin is 27, its an excellent age, hes got 4 good peak years, in those 4 years we would have to buy a younger player and hope that he even comes close to the talent Schneiderlin has.

If I was Everton I would never buy a player under the age of 25 ever again.

No, and I've stated that during the earlier conversation. A mix is required.

But being able to find undervalued talent like Gana or turn someone like Leighton Baines into a world class player is the great financial equalizer. It's very difficult, but it's not impossible.

Sometimes it makes sense to sign someone who may only be a 3-4 year investment (and this may be one of those times). Other times it doesn't.

I'll be extremely disappointed if we don't get in at least 5 players - GK, CB, CM, winger, striker.

GK - Pickford
CB - Van Dijk
CM - Schneiderlin
Winger - Depay
Striker - Dolberg (obviously never seen him play like).

In an ideal world.

You're quite right I'm sure, talent wise at least. But things like being happy living in the country/city (Morgan wouldn't have to move for us), speaking the langauge, and being able to handle playing in the prem are all fairly huge factors, which are totally separate from talent. I think signing a proven Prem star is exactly the right way to go given that we need stability right now. But then I would also be looking at the next big thing too, given our resources and recruitment team.

That's not what I'm saying at all.

Any team in any sport in any competition should strive to be able to identify undervalued players and help them develop them to reach their full potential. Players like Gana and N'Golo Kante are good examples.

One that Koeman knows this well, and somewhat by association, one that's less of a risk? 27 means 5 good years left. Possibly more.
