Mate there's absolutely no point in having some boss number ten playmaker in when it doesn't suit the System or the players we have - likely thrives off having anotge cf with him and players running from deep., having a mate, sigurdson type won't change owt

Doesn't have to play that far up, could play a little deeper like an Arteta or Fabregas. These type of players seem to have disappeared or have been pushed up the field to make room for grocks as every team now requires two defensive midfielders at all times.

In either Schneiderlin or Barkley's position. One of which isn't signed yet and the other who isn't doing enough to be guaranteed a starting place.
I would be very surprised if Barkley is sold and on the basis of his last few games with a better midfield behind him, I'd be very surprised if Koeman doesn't persevere with him in till the end of the season to see if he comes good. If we were to go out and get someone IMO it would have to be someone like Mata, I think to sign a player of his stature in this window is very unlikely.

I think it is worth pointing out here that Koeman has no qualms about sticking Barkley on the bench. I'm sure if Schneiderlin or Gueye were playing crap that they'd get the same treatment.

I'm just putting forth an argument for a particular-type of player that doesn't line up with my idea of Schneiderlin.

Not saying to sell him. I'm just saying that his starting place isn't untouchable and that he has to deliver consistently to stay in the team.

This.

I like Sig, but as always people are missing the point in regards to how the manager wants to play.

Looking at S'ton, Tadic was often utilised as the de facto 'playmaker' over the past few years, but he was hardly played central. He's a winger who creates, but he had Mane, Long, Pelle etc around him pressing.

Koeman then had three 'runners' in midfield, but he didn't have a playmaker like Barkley in the squad.

Now, he does, but in order to fulfil that role, Ross needs to be played deeper. He needs space. Now, we also have Rom, who needs support around him.

So, we need two 'wide forwards' to play either side of Rom and do the pressing/neat link up play, and then we can have the three in midfield who provide the energy, but among those three we'd have Ross to pull the strings and if he has players like Gueye, McCarthy/Besic (if still here/fit) and hopefully Schneiderlin (Davies long term) around him we've got the perfect package to also mix it up in game.

That may look like a 4-3-3, but it's also easily switched to a 4-4-2.

It's a huge shame re. Bolasie as he gave that bit of width but also that pace and power up top. But injuries happen and he isn't a natural forward, so it doesn't change the need for that.

Options would always be great, and if Koeman wants to go 4-2-3-1 we need a proper 'no.10'. It's what was missing from Martinez's side for two years once Pienaar got crocked, but we look to be heading in a different direction now, albeit slowly.

That being said, I'd happily take Sig if he was an option.

I hope both that Koeman and Walsh both want and are looking for that magical number 8 for this window. I don't like having to rely solely on wingers creating the chances because it makes it easier for other teams to set up to stop us playing if we only play one way.

Lukaku seems to prefer receiving the ball played onto his run or into his feet when he's backing into the defender at the top of the box.

I agree none of the players we were linked with in the summer were that type of player but I hope Koeman has identified a need for that player in the 4 months since, maybe he hoped Barkley could be moved there at the time.

For the amount of money we'd be spending on Schneiderlin, talking 20 million +, I think the team would benefit more from a player who can provide more further up the pitch than another "box-to-box" or "Deep Lying Playmaker" type. After Cleverley, Gibson, and McCarthy's performances in the last 3 years I just want to move away from that type of "play it safe/crab passes" (Not saying Schneiderlin is this exactly, but he's not as creative as I want) player stopping us from punishing teams and fannying with the ball outside of the box before running out of ideas and losing possession.

Hes nothing like The Clev, Gibson or even McCarthy, he has more to his game than them all.

IMO.

Well Koeman did express an interest in the boy Gabi, which would be the attacking pivot in the centre or at least that type of player, somebody to do the leg work up top, link the midfield to the attack and could play alongside Lukaku either alongside him in a duo or even on the wing as a 3 with somebody like Depay on the other side.

As I say I think Koeman will buy options this window, players that allow us to play 4-3-3, 3-4-3, 3-5-2 and of course 4-2-3-1, each formation, if the correct players are bought, would allow us to be a danger down the middle and also from the wings.
