I'm all up for nurturing our current talented players, but stop-gaps such as this would be ideal until they're ready or we sign someone better.
I don't think it will happen personally, but I can see the logic behind bringing him in for a low-ish fee.
...you might be right. My thinking is he wouldn't have been let go if he was seen as back up to Baines and with his injury record Galloway was always likely to be needed. You keep your best back up.

I'd rather have Fonte in the side than Mori, for example. But I'd rather have Mori than Jags at this stage.
Fonte to come in as a stop-gap if Jags is off, and then go and get a Keane/Gibson/Koulibaly (who knows) in the summer.
Mori then goes if he hasn't improved, and we have Fonte or Williams as back-up, while Holgate continues to provide cover for both CB and RB.
whats to stop fonte doing a distin as soon as he signs? if were up to snuff then go in for lindelof seeing as united dont need him in yet.

Nothing mate, except he's been just as good this season as he was last and the one before that.
I'm not gonna be gutted if we're not in for him/don't get him but, I think it's a definite possibility if there's an opportunity for Jagielka to go.
That being said, you make a good point about the pace issue.

He is good he was injured at the start of the season and Lascelles/Clark have performed well since. Was their best defender by a mile last season (yes they got relegated but one man isn't a defense).
I'd throw a wedge at Keane and/or Gibson myself.
Not because they're English but because they're proper defenders and I love a good clearance.
