January Transfer Thread 2017

Really?

He's a very good player imo - better than any other option we currently have as a 'playmaker' after Barkley.

We're so reliant on Barkley to create, as we have nobody else capable of getting us goals/creating chances from midfield - something which Sigurdsson has done all of his PL career.

My concern with Gylfi is that he's very one-paced and most of what he creates is from dead ball situations. I remember seeing a stat somewhere about him creating less than 10 goals from open play in his entire Premier League career

He's a decent player, but at 27 he'd have little re-sale value and I don't think he'd contribute as much as people might think. He'd certainly improve our free kicks and corners though

If we are going to go after any defender this window, it should be Michael Keane. Good player, good potential, good price. This allows us to cover an area well until we focus on a more established center half in the summer window.
I think we should gift Pennington, Browning and Galloway to Burnley then buy them back off them for 20m a piece in the summer.
We'd have more faith in players if we spend more money on them. lol

Not sure how we expect to get on the level of the top 6 by signing their unwanted players and players from clubs beneath us.

Not denying they will strengthen us but bit sceptical as to how much difference it's going to make. I guess we don't have much option... It all just feels a bit safe, we seem to be all about buying from English clubs at the moment rather than looking abroad.

Good points, and it's possibly why we wouldn't be going for him for anything over say, £20m, and I reckon Swansea would want more.

The only plus he'd have over somebody like Dzagoev IMO is his PL experience. But Dzagoev is experienced at the top level also given his games in the CL, and if possible I reckon that would be a deal that would boost us just as much.

We need to get Schneiderlin in and confirmed first, mind.

It's not quite as simple as that is it? otherwise Leicester would never have won the league with half a team of journeymen! They had Robert Huth and Danny Simpson in the back 4 mate.

Well who do we sign then?

We're not yet in a position where we can buy players from Europe who already play for clubs at our level (i.e. Koulibaly, Witsel etc)

So, we'd be in the same boat anyway. Taking cast offs from a bigger club, or taking the stars of clubs not as good as us anyway...

Yeah at this stage we either develop our own players or we take players with talent who aren't getting a chance elsewhere and give them a chance to shine with us

It happens quite a lot in sports

I would be set against signing Fonte, unless under very favourable conditions, which neither the player nor Southampton are likely to agree to. It would be criminal to sanction a move for a player of his age with the first 6 months of his contract taken up only with competing for 7th place. Only on a two year contract with Jagielka leaving the club during this window would I think it would be reasonable to consider.

I'm as critical as anyone regarding the issues Everton in part seem to bring on themselves with transfers but I hope since the Niasse fiasco that the necessary checks and balances have been fortified.

As much as we need players its not the function of the CEO and board to be waving through approval of bids without consideration. I imagine being Everton, they certainly don't do that anyway if we are haggling over £2m for Schneiderlin. Walsh and Koeman both need to agree on a player before approaching the board, that's my understanding.

I can understand the need for Walsh to "agree" with Koemans targets for the need to keep a working relationship going but I would actually prefer if he proves himself strong enough to back his own judgement, and say no in a situation such as this, if that's what he thought, especially if Koeman is not planning on staying long.

It is never a good thing if the board block a manager's choice of signing, and it should be rare enough, but necessary on occasion. People scoff at "transfer committees" but in effect all clubs have them, and for good reason. Big money is being spent. It's none of Kenwright/Elstone's business whether or not Fonte would or would not be a good addition in a purely footballing sense, but it should be very much their concern adding a 33 year old to the squad in the wake of signing Ashley Williams 6 months previously.
