January Transfer Thread 2017

Somebody has pointed this out a few times but of our last 13 goals scored in league and cup Rom has scored four of them.
He's vital, of course, but the reason we've started winning games is others are finally chipping in.

Now, my point is that I'd rather us go for another player to improve the first team rather than this mythical 'back up' that you keep preaching about that you think will guarantee goals. They won't - that's why they'd be available at this stage in a season and it's why they'd be brought in as 'back up' - just like Valencia.
Oh, improve the first team, of course, why didn't literally everyone already think of that. Bland assertions change nothing. Your stats from the last few games may be a sign of a new trend due to changes to our playing style OR it may be a blip in the data. If you look at the stats for the season, Rom has a hand in around half of our goals. Ignore that though, because it doesn't suit your argument.

They have better options than Valencia!! He couldn't even get on the West Ham bench. Leicester have Vardy and Slimani. I'd take a player like Son at Spurs over Valencia any day of the week. The RS have Sturridge and Origi, and while I don't think they're fantastic they're better than Valencia. They also don't rely as heavily on their cf's as we do with their system. I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again, if Rom is out of the team we are going to struggle to score. There doesn't seem to be a plan B. Valencia, Mirallas, DCL none if these can lead the line for us if Rom gets injured.

Leicester are 15th and Vardy/Slimani have scored 10 goals between them this season mate...

Yes, I'd love to have a player like Son - but he's not an out and out striker. Spurs struggle to score without Kane as he's their focal point.

And yes, this is Sturridge and Origi who while being better than Valencia, have got 5 between them all season.

But you can't just bring in a 'top quality' back up player unless you have clear options to give them game time...

Why can't you get this?

Why would a 10/15 goal striker (say, Rondon) come and sit on our bench in case Rom gets a knock when they will be guaranteed a start at their current club.

And why would 'Son' leave Spurs to sit on our bench ???

Why would any really good striker do that ??

We are not in Europe, and not even n any cups!!!
You've missed my point. Of course he wouldn't. The other poster said we were basically in the same position as Spurs regarding forward options. I disagreed.

I literally he said "he's vital" mate

Gabbiadini works best as a second striker it's just the system Napoli play doesn't allow for it. For the price Southampton are paying would surely be worth a shot when we were interested for more in the summer and the mirallas role in our current system fits him to a tee. If not, and after pulling out of Belfodil and loaning Geri, I hope we have someone else lined up. Like everyone else here I'm worried about Lukaku going down/Kev hitting one of his cold spells

I also think Koeman really likes DCL and sees him as that "target-man" we were trying to bring in. Koeman probably doesn't want to hinder his development after witnessing how good our youth players have been.

Well, I didn't really say that.

I'm saying they don't have two out and out *reliable* striking options. Son is better than Valencia, yes.

Son's good games have come when he's played as a 10 or out wide.

I don't know why you've put "top quality" in quotes because I haven't said that anywhere. I would be happy to sign prospects for that position. You seem to think that I am proposing that we buy Aguero or someone, I'm not, I am proposing we need forwards. According to you this is impossible though. As there are no forwards better than Valencia that we could attract. If that's true, we will never finish above 7th.

He might not though...

You can't get any striker who is actually worth their salt to come and sit on the bench (which is what they'd be doing) midway through the season, joining a club who hasn't got any cup games to even rotate for.

I'm not saying we shouldn't try, but realistically the quality that would be on offer for that kind of role is exactly what we have now.

Valencia.

People are always banging on about having another striker but name me one team outside of the top four that has two reliable strikers?

Liverpool don't particularly, though Mane and Firmino are their biggest threats.

Spurs don't - not really.

And the rest of the league don't have either.

Difference is mate, all the teams inside the top 6 have a reliable second goalscorer, we actually don't

rs - Firminio 8, Lallana 7, Coutinho 5 (having missed 2 months), Milner 6
Spurs - Alli 11, Son 7, Eriksen 5.

thats just going off their scorers after the the top scorer is removed

We are left with Coleman second with 4, then Barkley with 3. thats alarming mate, no one in our squad is on target to get more than 5 league goals this season besides Lukaku and Coleman.

Maybe the concern isnt about not havign a reliable second striekr as much as it is about havign only one reliable striekr when we don't have any other player from midfield who contributes anywhere near a decent goal return
